There are basically three definitions of winter, and we've passed two:

Astronomic winter: December 21-March 19
Ancient winter: Harvest-Sowing
Vernacular winter: First snow-Last snow

It's 17f/-8c here, with more than nominal snow accumulation (about 2 inches). Fuck technical terminology, it's winter.

Four definitions; here in Oz and apparently Canada, judging by Descan's post, Winter (and seasons in general) are all exactly three months, beginning on the first days of March, June, September and December.

Quote from: wikipedia
These dates are somewhat later than those used to define the beginning and end of the meteorological winter – usually considered to span the entirety of December, January, and February in the Northern Hemisphere and June, July, and August in the Southern.

Quote from: wikipedia
In the UK, meteorologists consider winter to be the three coldest months of December, January and February. In Scandinavia, winter traditionally begins on 14 October and ends on the last day of February...  ... In Celtic nations such as Ireland (using the Irish calendar) and in Scandinavia, the winter solstice is traditionally considered as midwinter, with the winter season beginning 1 November, on All Hallows, or Samhain. Winter ends and spring begins on Imbolc, or Candlemas, which is 1 or 2 February

So yeah, answer is depends on what kind of winter, so it's perfectly accurate so say it is Winter and also accurate to say it isn't. All depends on your point of view. Where I'm from, Winter was always Dec-Jan-Feb.

It's the time with the cold and the snow and the all other things good. If we could just do something about this Daystar infestation, I'd be set.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

How can anyone not love trains? A train is a journey into the unknown, smelling of iron, snow, and diesel fuel. Great trains cross Siberia from the Urals to the Sea of Japan, carrying weathered people past sights both picturesque and desolate. A train is not merely a machine, it is also the residue of all its travels, the smoke of the kilometers it has burned in the measured rhythm of its wheels.
One cannot love the Motherland, and not love those weary wanderers on the greatest of her roads.
A wise Karl Pilkington once said, what the hell is the point of a journey whose only selling point is that it takes loads of time?

I don't care if it's winter or not.

The amount of snow around here is too damn high!

Cold can be irritating. Waiting for the bus in the morning is always annoying.

Fix'd. Nothing terribly good about the constant ache in the bones that cold brings. Damn, I'm old.

I get bone ache from that too. Then again it's the only thing keeping me awake, so I have a different view than most.

The cold makes my joints hurt like heck.
My knuckles have been aching like crazy, and my spine feels like it'll snap any second.
And I'm not even old! It feels like I have arthritis, or something.

Huh. I thought I felt like that because of the amount of punishment I've taken over the course of my life.
