From the sound of it, it's a reaction that does something to oxygen to make it harmful, or not function as oxygen.

Well, 'deprivation' implies you take something away, and 'catalytic' means you use a catalyst, i.e. something that makes it easier for the reaction to take place... so, I take it that you mean either deoxidation, i.e. reduction, or oxygen deprivation as in asphyxiation.
Yea don't ask me the formula but i was able to devised a reaction with a catalyst that would be able to convert all of the oxygen into a compound within a confined space within half an hour, figure around 5 minutes you'll notice the difference, lots of materials though and of course requires some type of mixing apparatus.

I can do that!

Pump room with methane, light! No need for a catalyst, either! :P
But thats not CHEMISTRY, thats lame ass biogly.

but you are just changing the percentage air mixture instead of converting it, throw a match in there then its chem :P

(put a certain chemical on jelly babies and it reacts with the sugar, setting them on fire, making them jump about and emitting a high-pitched noise)

Potassium chlorate.

Also, you guys are still describing stuff way above what my high school chemistry class did. The biggest thing we did was mixing two chemicals to get a precipitate. And we were told that was stuff we would normally do in AP Chemistry (which I should have been in this year, except they dropped it as a course).

I'm from Tennessee, Hamilton county (arguably more influential than the state in terms of stuff like that). Given my state's seeming propensity to silly laws, I expect multiple to turn up.

No kidding. I used to live there, on Signal Mountain.

I do believe that this has come up before, in a discussion about Soviet nuclear targets.

Here:
Clearly I lived on top of a secret government facility buried deep inside Signal Mountain for half my childhood, and didnt realize it.

Either that or Russia really dislikes my dad my family for some reason. Can't seem to move out of a strike zone :P

Well, in my chemistry lessons I inhaled hydrochloric acid once by accident, and inhaled dilute, boiling hot sulphuric acid by accident.

First because someone took it out the fume cupboard, second because we were doing a flux reaction, and they Bunsen burner was too hot.

We were going to do two experiments, the 'screaming jellybabies' test (put a certain chemical on jelly babies and it reacts with the sugar, setting them on fire, making them jump about and emitting a high-pitched noise), and some experiment where you make bubbles filled with methane and light them, but apparently health and safety intervened and saved our precious lives from these nearly 100% safe experiments.
The most injury I've suffered in a chemistry experiment was splashing moderately-concentrated HCl on my arm once and burning myself on a hot piece of copper another time.

I've minorly burned myself with acid, but I was safe in chem. My school is fairly laisez faire about that, but maybe they have strong faith in the chemical baths.

My Chem teacher just did the jelly baby thing to a candy cane though. Or maybe there was some other highly volatile compound emitting a really bright light. I think it was Potassium Nitrate though.

I'm applying for a job and as part of that I have to take an online questionnaire.

EDIT: And then the whole thing bugged out and I can't get back to it.
I finally found my way back and I can't access the page. Given that I now have five days to complete that questionnaire I hope that automated bug report gets noticed.

Ugh, you had to remind me.

Some completely stupid kid in Industrial Arts (our school's stupid name for shop class) has already had several incidents this year, most of which are caused by a complete lack of attention to the rules.

Some of these incidents include burning himself in the face with a welder, splashing chemicals into one of his eyes (which remained blind for a few days) and horsing around with a friend while holding rather pointy tools.

Someone else has just started a Mecha forum game. Mine is slightly different in tone, but now I can't start mine without looking like I just copied him!
Aargh!
