As a follow up to this.

I was behind on rent this month. My roommate and I had spoken about it last month, and though he'd said it was okay, apparently it wasn't.

Earlier this week, I'd been having issues connecting to our router. Passive Aggressive stuff isn't new for my roommate, and I suspected he'd done something out of quiet spite, but after some probing he said nothing about it. I found a way to do a factory reset, and was able to get a little bit of work done for a client that night, though I lost most of the day.

This morning, when I woke up for a Skype meeting with another client (a bit twitchy about the freelancing thing, but offering high pay), I was puzzled to find that I had no internet access again. Walking into the living room, I discovered that my roommate had apparently decided to disconnect and take the modem to work with him this morning. General inconvenience aside, after I walked 30 minutes to the Library for net access, I got a very disappointed email informing me that after my no-show, the client decided to go with their fallback candidate. Over a week of careful negotiations for nothing, a valuable long-term client burned, and a month and a half of living expenses down the toilet in an instant.

As I said, the passive aggressive stuff isn't new for him. Loud sighs whenever he walks past my room, stomping around and slamming cabinets late at night, ignoring me when I say hi, pointing the cat laser at my door so the cat scratches and leaps into it while I'm trying to sleep, locking the latch on the front door so I can't get in without asking. I tell him I'm proud of something I cooked, and later he insults the smell of it. I talk about how I used to be self-conscious of my thinning hair, and later he asks me to sweep the floor because I'm "shedding so much hair" all over the place, etc. I have little patience for Passive Aggression as it is, but the modem stunt went beyond that, and sabotaged my ability to make a living. An attack on something I've committed months and months to making work. This wasn't just stupid... it was personal.

I'm moving out at the end of the month. And I have no idea where I'm going to be staying. Possibly my car. But fuck this.
Huh.
Well, you're a very controlled person, Soli, and I applaud you for that at least. If it were me there, I'd probably have made your situation somewhat worse, at least in the eyes of nonmurderers.

So... out of curiosity.  How many decent jobs are really out there?  Ones where low-level employees are given proper rewards and dignity?  Do they actually exist?  Does anyone here have one?

Going through my jobs...

Construction - okay pay, no thanks, some dignity, hard work.
McJob - shit pay, no thanks, no dignity
Telesurvey caller - shit pay, verbal abuse, no dignity, the motherfuckers didn't de-louse their fucking headsets
Mail stocker - shit pay, a few thanks, not much work
Student teacher - no pay, no thanks, hard work
Cashier - shit pay with commission shit pay, no thanks, lots of busywork

So... no. There aren't any as far as I know. I expect the State jobs I get invited to apply to will be low on thanks and dignity, but 25k a year will make me grin and bear it. I assure you, this was not at all what I wanted or expected after graduating from college.

I'm expecting a whole bunch of answers like that, and then someone will timidly present some modestly positive story that goes against the grain.

I worked at Subway for a while, and it was actually not so bad. Nice boss, good coworkers, never had a bad customer. Although I'm more skeptical about your pay.

Wait, wait... If the guy is pissed at you for not being able to pay rent...

What kind of moronic asshole is he? "You can't pay rent, so I'm going to make sure you don't get any money! Thereby preventing you from paying rent! MWAH hahaha!"

Yeah, I got majorly ninja'd.

Although I don't think volunteer work counts, unless you were actually supporting yourself on it.

Ehn... been at a bit of a distance, but what I've seen of library work hasn't seemed too terrible. Personal interaction has been mostly volunteer, but the workers I've worked with have been pretty upbeat about things, general appreciation seems relatively high, and customer base (such as it is) was pretty nice where I volunteered at. It's definitely work, especially as the library size goes up, but not too backbreaking. Haven't even heard too many horror stories from folks in bigger areas, which is like amazing.

Pay's usually iffy and good goddamn luck getting the work (fairly saturated and shrinking, iirc), but... there you go.

E: Non/not-for profit in general seems to lean more toward that kind of thing than, well, more directly commercial ventures. At least from what I've seen. Problem is making a bloody living doing that kind of thing, hum.

I'm pretty sure that is just how sociopaths think.
And I mean seriously, between the apparent lack of empathy, lying about social issues in such a fashion, and the sense of entitlement to sole use of resources, I think it is safe to say this guy should get that checked out... Except it isn't likely.

Well, to be completely fair, my co-workers are great. Even the ones above me don't have a stick up their nether region, so I don't really have any complaints about them. They're good people.

What I dislike is the control from Corporate. We cannot adjust our AC because Corporate, even in the middle of the epic heat wave. We have customers coming in asking for items we straight up do not have because it was in the national ads. We have metrics set way high. And the customers.

Well, most of them are reasonable folk. The 20% who aren't reasonable, though... ugh, fuck those people.

No, I can't change the price on an item because you say it's on sale. No, I don't know what is advertised because I don't have a copy of the ads. No, I cannot do anything about your reward points being missing. No, I cannot just accept the coupon. No, the fitting room is not a bathroom. No, I can't just scan the same item 30 times. Yes, I have to ask for ID even though you are clearly overage.  No, I really can't just abandon my register to run around the store trying to find another item for you because there's a GIANT LINE. Yes, I have to look in the bag you are trying to purchase. No, I can't tell you the APR on the credit card. No, I can't add an item to your purchase after asking if that was everything and hitting "total." No, I can't magically make the fucking credit card reader work. No, it's not going to charge you twice. No, I can't just redeem your reward points without your PIN number.

20% is a metric shitton of bad customers... Seriously, I must have served thousands of sandwiches that people were too lazy to make themselves for one tenth the cost, and never once got flak. Either I'm the luckiest guy ever, or you had a pretty bad run.
