I went through 2 sets of headphones in 4 weeks a little while ago. Good quality ones, too.

My Nokia earbuds last me about 4 months of getting thrashed around, pulled out, stuffed back in the jack and generally abused.

The half-euro ones I get for my PC last about 2 weeks with the same treatment, or 3 months with careful usage.


The upside is that they're damn easy to fix.

Okay, I managed to coax it to play sound in both ears. Now I can use it a little bit longer.

Then you weld them in place. At least that's where the problem usually is?

Stuff you need: Duck tape, soldering iron, solder, box cutter/sharp knife, replacement jack.

First, find out if the cable got unsoldered at the 1) earpiece or the 2) jack. Wriggle the cable near them around a bit and see when it starts working. If you're sure you've identified where the cable got unstuck, go for either set of instructions:

1) You're lucky.
CAREFULLY dismantle the earpiece. Solder the wire back on. Reassemble.
You're done.

2) The jack getting messed up is more common and more annoying, since the solder is encased in plastic, so you can't get to it. If you can dismantle the jack, use 1), else proceed with this:
Cut off the old jack. Peel a bit of covering off the wire. Solder the new jack. Reassemble new jack. Seal with duck tape.
It'll look ugly, and will be prone to getting unsoldered again if you yank on it too hard, but it'll be easier to fix from now on.
At worst, you might add another 1/4 to its lifespan like this.
