Because stupid.

The real question is why it wasn't one of my standard passwords.

Apparently, this particular lua API function for dfhack:

dfhack.units.getPhysicalAttrValue(unit, attr_type)

doesn't exist.

Eek.

EDIT: Nor does the equivalent one for mental attributes.

I was playing Dwarf Fortress. Autosave kicked in at the beginning of summer. Things going along happily. Then my computer shuts off for seemingly no reason. I was keeping tabs on its charge, because even though its plugged in and says its fully charged, my computer is a big liar and it wasn't running hot at all.
A little miffed at the progress I lost, I wait a little bit before playing again. It gives me an opportunity to retry something I fucked up that I had set up the season before. I get frustrated at my dwarves, but otherwise things are going alright.
Then my computer overheats and shuts off when I wasn't paying attention.
Now I have to use this stupid fan. And I've lost the will to play.

... man, I touched a windows 8 computer not too long ago, 'cause my grandparent apparently got a laptop with the OS and needed a little help getting something set up.

My hands felt scuzzy afterwards. Had to go wash 'em. My current opinion of Win 8 is "That is a goddamn abomination."

Its not bad on a tablet though. Saw it in a store, not entirely rubbish.
But that just seems more reason to have just made it only for tablets in the first place instead of trying to merge two completely different control methods into one.

Guys, it isn't difficult to access the desktop on Windows 8.  Or maybe I'm just lucky mine came with it already having a link from the Start Shell.

DIfficult, no it isn't. But if it is a desktop OS, it should start on the damn desktop. If it doesn't, then what are you trying to hide in your system installed on a non-tablet?

I would have been slightly less appalled if there was a simple way to disable that start shell thingy. But in the short period I tried buggering with it before giving up in disgust and just telling my grandparent the multiple-step process of getting to the desktop, I couldn't find one. Tentative web searches suggested that the only way to get rid of it was installing goddamn third party apps. That's just kinda' vile, t'me.

Its sorta like changing between desktops in linux (GNOME, KDE, etc). Except theres less 'Pick one, if you don't like it you can change to a different one later in a complicated but likely doable manner' and more 'You're going to use this, and if you don't want to then you have to find a third party to fix it for you or go away.'

The short story is that Microsoft is betting that touch phones and tablets are the next big thing, and their desktop market is going to nosedive. Nobody likes the current Windows Phone implementations, so they're trying to force an entire generation of newbs to get used to the Metro interface so that when they inevitably realize a tablet is the newb thing they wanted all along, then they'll go "oh, I already know how to use this one".

So, it's not even intended as a desktop OS AT ALL, it's just intended to hook people into Windows tablets in the future. Plus, they can make a Microsoft App Store, walled-garden and pitch the idea of a unified platform to developers. (of course they give it real cheap to the OEM's too).

So, Windows 8 is pitched at everyone EXCEPT the people actually using it.
