http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2013/1/11/nation/20130111120944&sec=nationThis rally is so stupid.
The opposition party does not make any suggestions on how to fix the country, all they do is hold protests on how unfair the government is. They dig up issues with no evidence (e.g. prime minister murdered so and so) and expect people to buy it. They call themselves the People's Alliance; everyone who refers to themselves as "the People" have always been deluded.
The government decides to label them as rioters (which is more subtle in our English papers). They ban this crap, they shut down roads to the area, telling people that it's going to be a traffic jam, but the real purpose is to imply that "Look, the opposition party is trying to shut down your roads. We build roads. If you love us, you'll vote for us."
Government and police beat up and tear gas a peaceful riot. Ok, that's subject to debate, but it's a hell lot less suspicious if they didn't have a law where all rioters and journalists have to give in their camera tapes. They take pictures of cars with the windshield smashed in and attribute it to angry rioters. What they don't mention is that the windshields were broken by tear gas canisters.
The opposition WANTS to get beaten up, martyred and have this all caught on tape, Gandhi style. They'd lose the next election for sure without it, since they're generally very incompetent. C'mon, they're trying to abolish university loans (because abolishing it is an instant short term bribe to all students that they don't have to pay back the loan, with no long term gain).
The government controls pretty much 80% of the mainstream media and loads it up with propaganda. The other 20% can't say anything bad or they get sued. The online media they can't control, so they put in worse Internet legislation than SOPA (e.g. if someone posts a hostile comment from your app, the person who made the app can be sued). Of course, the opposition parliament members who we so kindly voted into parliament were able to prevent the law from being enacted, but they were too incompetent to spot a bad law.
Netizens pointed out this law and tried to get it repealed. Federal government denied to repeal it. Opposition then played the martyr and did all kinds of claims about the governments evils and repression of freedom of speech (not that freedom of speech is even in our culture). Even though the opposition representatives were obviously slacking off on their highly paid jobs to make sure that shitty laws don't pass.
