So How Long?
« on: June 11, 2010, 01:00:59 pm »

So, having just hap a nine minute screaming match at the military screen.

Again.

How long do you think it'll be before Toady gives the whole thing an overhaul? My current issues are:

1) Curser keeps resetting to places it shouldn't, allowing me to replace the Militia Captain I just appointed, and make me reset the whole squad.

2) Inability to see skills of recruits

3) No easy way to draft on the fly- I think a pool of recruits that could then be added to squads makes a lot more sense. As in, you're zoomed into a group of migrants seeing their skills and with a press of, oh, say D on the preferences window, they're painted as a recruit.

4) Better communication. I mean, I still can figure out how to to set-up an alert that makes them switch from training weapons to real ones. I know its possible (I think), I just haven't succeeded

I know, I know, I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, but you can't let off steam to anyone who doesn't play DF, because then they look at you funny and wonder if you've managed to weaponize Excel. Anyways, what are your gripes with the military, and how long until Toady gives it that overhall? I am pleased with its great versatility, but it's crippled by an obstinate interface.

Nice one, not sure when I'll be feeling like killing a baby but these things are good to know.
This is why we can't have nice things... someone will just wind up filling it with corpses.

The new military system works great, assuming the bugs get hammered out. And Toady has already fixed a good chunk of the military bugs.

It is very complex but extremely powerful. You just need to relearn it. This is not the military version of 40D. This is 31.XX. A brave new world.

Dwarf Therapist makes things much easier.  You can also install an optional tab that shows the military skill level of all your dwarves (see towards the end of the Dwarf Therapist thread on the modding forums).   Sadly it doesn't show the strength/agility/toughness of your dwarves, so you still have to flip back and forth between DT and DF if you don't want to end up with pathetic specimens in your military, but it's still far easier than using DF on its own.

I love the new military system. Except for the obvious flaws in some parts of it not working (group training sessions, buggy armor management, etc), it's excellent and so powerful it almost hurts. Once it's actually functional, I'm never ever ever going to need to mass-recruit every dwarf just to take down a single ambush.

the more time i spend with the new military setup the more i appreciate it but i do agree strongly that it should show more info on the dwarves combat skills while scrolling through to recruit. What would be even nicer is if the list was sorted by combat skill so all trained dwarves were at the top. I love the direction of the new system though.

You can't let off steam to anyone who doesn't play DF, because then they look at you funny and wonder if you've managed to weaponize Excel.

This is quite funny and very true, so it's going in my sig. Wooo, haven't had a DF related sig for a while.

The way I see it is that the military screen is stupidly daunting at first and you're left wondering just what the hell you're going to do. But then I started to get the hang of it and I'm catching these occasional glimpses of beauty whenever I, say, set up a proper patrol route or give everyone a badass uniform that I know I can reach if I just work for it.

So I like it and can't wait for Toady to make it even better, whenever that might be.

I don't think I agree with that, specifically the already fixed a good chunk part.

The concept is amazing but most of it is still hopelessly broken.
Scheduling crashing the game - fixed
Dwarves not equipping gear right - sorta fixed (this was supposed to be improved, but I constantly have to check gear, because dwarves always equip a single boot or single glove, very irritating)
Marksdwarves - Not fixed
Hunting - Not fixed
Scheduling training - Not fixed
Squad screen - Still crashes game if you press S while any squad members have individual orders (at least in .05, I haven't checked in .06 but there was no mention in the changelog)
Dead Dwarves are still listed in squads - Not fixed

I'm not criticizing Toady, he's done some truly remarkable things, and continues to do so. I do wish the outstanding military bugs got a higher priority though. These and immortal beasts seem to be the most frustrating bugs to lots of people, or at the very least to me.

Edit: Forget that. I think I may have just been a bit stupid when it came down to my item management

Well, between the two, it's making the game a lot more Fun than it used to be...  For better or worse.

I've always relied largely upon my traps for defense, with the military as a backup.  But now I've got titans and forgotten beasts walking (or flying) right past my traps, which means I need a functioning military.  Which is something I could manage in 40d, but is thus far beyond my grasp in .31

So I've wound up walling myself in and hoping nothing learns how to break down constructions.

Oh my God, come back fleeting glimpses of beauty, come back!

My dwarves refuse to listen to orders and are just standing there waiting for their leader to organize a training session he's never going to get around to.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFORGOTTEN BEAST YOU RETARDS, DID YOU MISS IT?

EDIT: Fixed it, they couldn't path there and thus were ignoring me. Fair enough.

Retards.
