There will always be at least a minimum number of volcanoes on any generated world.

If you want to increase the volcano number, just set the volcano min in your custom worldgen to a couple hundred, that'll make them easier to find.

It is really, really easy to flood this place with magma fwiw.

Doors stop fire, right?

Actually, no, that just causes zillions of rejected worlds. I've tried it.

Hi!

First of all, when you gen a world, nullify all the minimum values following the playable civ requirement at the very end (minimum low/middle/high). They just cause unnecessary rejects.

Next, I suggest setting volcanism variance to the max value for both.

Then, set minimum volcanoes to 200 (which is the max).

Then you should be set.

Have a look at my current world for an example of the results (shameless plug, especially since you can also download it :) :) :) ):

Ah! Note that in 31.xx, you must activate the magma layer, or there will be no volcanoes at all! (The minimum will be ignored and not cause rejections)

It used to be that in 40d, volcanos were half-necessary to guarantee magma. In DF2010 however, I view them as unnecessary difficulty. Remember that volcanos deny you sedimentary layers. Sure you'll have more gems thanks to metamorphic rock being likely to be around, but scarcity of iron (and even bronze if you're not careful) just makes your life much harder IMO.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

This works well.  And if you are careful, you can even find a volcano that is more like a 40d style surface-exposed magma pipe.  That is, one without the extreme elevation that is typical.
