134 sieging invaders.
« on: June 11, 2010, 07:08:07 am »

I'm playing slighty modded vanilla 31.05 (added only some races and large battle animals from Deon's mod).

So there were 7 enemy races in worldgen.

And on the second year after embark two of them have come for my fortress.
I've locked the entrance and started military industry  :D to armor my dwarves.

...next season 4 or 5 other races come and lay sieges too.

Now i have 134 units of invaders on the map.

Entrance is locked but... what to do with them?
Please help with your fantasy ;-)

There's the obvious solution, and there's the solution where you arm each and every dwarf in full ☼steel armour☼ with a ☼steel battleaxe☼, or adamantine if you've go it,  in your fort to go kick some invader ass. Or, if you've breached HFS, send them in through there.

Have the outside shrubs a half-mile away been watered yet?

As it's only year two, I guess you lack the infrastructure for the more creative solutions. And it's too late to set up a catapult tower or magma tank. So it's either you charge out or you let them in. I usually turn my entrance tunnel into a gatling crossbow trap hell for basic defense. They never jam and keep shooting and piling up corpses until they run out of ammo, which they have plenty of. Should be possible with some wood for the ammo, bones for the crossbows and some mechanisms. Survivors get chopped up by the fortress military behind the next corner.

This is 40d, I heard marksmen are useless in the new release, don't know if it's the crossbows.

Both actually - military marksmen don't know how to shoot, and bolts themselves don't do as much damage while the new materials system is balanced out.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Thats a pity.I guess ill wait to switch to .31 then. Dropping invaders in the archery range for live target practice is my favorite static defense method in 40d

I disagree. Bolts are extremely effective in adventure mode. Even silver ones.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
