Ok, if i'm a fanboy, then what am i a fan of? Just throwing out random insults is not cool. I was making a point that this pack works semi-decent ONLY under windows now, which is rather dumb, previous versions worked on other platforms with no tweaking.

first off: i don't even remember what i was doing there
second off: i didn't say it
about the pack: Lucas and I wrote it in Microsoft Visual Basic (to make a GUI), so... that language is limited to Windows. we looked at other things, but didn't find an easy solution (well, we did find one OK one, but couldn't get it to work AFAIK)

oh, and:
WINE can't emulate net 3.5

worked for me in Ubuntu 10.4, albeit glitchy

Sorry if this has been asked before, but my search-fu is weak.

I'm using this here newb pack, but it won't save my parameters. Every time I load it, the default parameters load.. pop cap goes back to 200, cave-ins turn themselves back on, liquid depth goes back to "no", inits are back to default, etc. What am I missing, is there a way to keep the values I enter after I quit playing? Or do I have to re-enter them every time I start up the pack?

you could always edit the values manually in the init.txt and d_init.txt files quite easily. the files are located in the following directory:

<Drive Name>:\<Folder you saved it in>\LazyNewbPack[0.31.25][V9.1]\Dwarf Fortress 31.25\data\init   

personally i don't use this feature of the LNP, so i can't give you a step by step process to solve your problem.

but that is strange - are you sure you have .NET working properly? Also, are you launching DF from the LNP or by hand?

Just downloaded this and ESET security suite picked up several "trojans" in the DFhack directory.  Probably false positives but I couldn't find any mention of it here so I figured I'd let you guys know anyway.  It's not something I really have an interest in using so it's not a problem for me but it might be worth mentioning incase others find it and it puts people off from using the rest of the pack.

The files flagged up were: dfsuspend.exe, dfpause.exe, dflair.exe, dfflows.exe and dfexpbench.exe

those are indeed false positives. they are memory hacking tools, after all

I don't know what ESET is, but I'm a big fan of using Virus Total to check individual downloaded files.

My Anti-virus pops up saying there is some viruses, is this just a flop or should I be worried?

yes, they are false positives.
It's due to DFhack tools being memory editing tools, so some antiviruses think they're viruses.

AV companies are getting so overzealous with their classifications, I would not be surprised if soon we see notepad being flagged, because, you can like, write some malicious batch files or something with it...

Actually, before, the LNP was written as a batch file and worked fine. It's not the LNP, it's the DFhack tools

Wow .. don't know whether to thank you or curse you. I've peeked in on Dwarf Fortress for over a year, even downloaded it but never managed to get into it. The Newb pack and the accompanying video tutorials got me over the hump.

Now I'm exhausted because last night in my first fortress I kept thinking I'd go to bed after the next hallway was cleared, the next wave came in, the next .. the next ... then it was 3:30am.

Haven't had a game keep me up in nearly a decade!

Hi, I'm new here and i decided to try out this game after reading about it.
But every time i download the pack from either of the two mirrors, both 7zip and winzip tell me that the file cannot be extracted/opened as an archive.
Does this happen to anyone else or just me?
I seem to be able to download the main game and unzip it just fine, but would like to have all the extras that come with the pack.
