Maybe we could combine our projects:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Bentgirder

Having a ready-to-go save lets a new player skip the site-finding and preparation steps, and get into the game immediately. The tutorial is a bonus. Seems like the sort of thing a Lazy Newb would appreciate.  :)

Strangething, could you maybe put up some pictures with your guide on the wiki?  That'd be helpful I bet.

Is DFConfig included? I can't find it anywhere. I'm told to use DFConfig to get rid of aquifiers. Okay. I download DFConfig, drop it into the DF folder but keep getting an error when I run it ('Path not found').

No its not included yet because its not complete (tileset changer doesn't quite work)
It SHOULD work for aquifer removal though. Is the .exe in the same place the DF.exe is? And did you move ALL the files there?

EDIT:
I tested Bentgirder with .10 and it works fine. Did the raws change in .10?
Yes, it will work with .10. But the raws have been updated with combat/material fixes and some other cool stuff which might not carry over without a new world gen.

Ugg. I don't want to regenerate a world every time Toady releases an update. I copied the raws into region0/raws and it runs fine. That should cover all the combat fixes. If the graphics pack touches the raws, you'll have to overwrite them anyway.

If there's something essential that affects world gen, of course, I'd have to scrap Bentgirder to make a new world.  :(

Okay well if the combat fixes do apply without regen, then that should be fine.
I'm not entirely sure if Bentgirder should be packaged, or if I should just provide links to the file and tutorial. Anyone have any preferences?

Edit:

A link is probably the best thing. Players will need to run the save updater once they install the new save.

A lurker finally posts. Thank you so much for this pack. I've been following DF since 2010 started and development is so rapid that each time I play it's a new version. Your package makes the game much more accessible for a man with a laptop, two jobs and a baby, a.ka. a lazy newb.
So thank you thank you thank you.

My ascii-challenged little brother (who has wanted to play DF since I told him it's now possible to flood Hell) is about to try this out. Looking hopeful so far.

Wow thanks! You're definitely welcome. Glad i'm of help, and also that I pulled a lurker out from the depths :P.
BTW having two jobs and a kid hardly qualifies as Lazy! (Playing DF without spending an hour or more searching for and downloading/configuring everything does though :D)

We are all born ascii-challenged. It took me a long time to become literate, and a short time to become illiterate again. (I'm okay with it now though)
Anyways that's awesome! Report back with the inevitable frustration!

I don't know if it's a bug specific to this pack, though I've never seen it before:

There's a vermin called "rats" (not the same as "rat") which is tarding out and running around extremely quickly all over the place, so fast that it actually looks like random flickering.

Definitely not a pack issue. I've seen that happen with all sorts of random vermin (flies, fluffy wamblers, etc). Not sure if its intentional, check the DF bug tracker.

I saw that in vanilla DF. When my cat caught a "many rats" it transformed into a large number of normal rats. There were nearly 30 rat remains scattered around once my cat got done with them.

I think it's a way to track vermin populations, but it might be a bit buggy now.

I clicked on the PerfectWorldDF link to see what it was all about and stuff, but it brought me to the wrong thread!
