Underwater volcano!?
« on: June 10, 2010, 07:58:39 pm »

Hey guys, new to the forums but have been playing for at least a few months now.

I decided to challenge myself and embarked on a volcano island in the middle of an evil sea (lol)

Quickly, I realized that the volcano was IN THE OCEAN on the embark screen. I figured it was actually above it, BUT NO!

The TOP of the volcano was technically under the water. After 'discovering' a magma sea, some adamantium -150z down, and all sorts of gems/ores/etc the volcano quickly paused my game and said 'A section of the cavern has collapsed!' repeatedly! I tried to zoom in at the top of the volcano... low and behold, it was quickly being covered over by water/stone as I assume the magma was forcefully being cooled, and repeatedly collapsing due to it being a flimsy cover for tons and tons of ocean that wanted inside?

Steam is spewing everywhere around the volcano and it doesn't seem to want to stop collapsing in on itself, so its just spamming/freezing my game to point me to the random spot in the lava that collapsed. o.O

Is it a lost cause?

Screenshots please! :)

It would be cool if you've got an 'erupting' volcano, or even the first actual underwater volcano in DF!

Yea, its one of those rare things that makes DF so awesome. Even if it IS a glitch. :)

AFAIK you're the first person ever to find an underwater volcano, Jachim!  That's awesome.

Where's the embark group? Is there land elsewhere on the map?

The collapse is because there's obsidian being formed but there are no adjacent tiles to support it. It'll stop doing that once the edges solidify and move inward.

Give it to us nao.
If you want two see if it eventually stabilizes, go to announcements and make it so cave-ins don't cause pausing.

Go to announcements.txt and remove pause/center for collapses, like this:

I definitely did read about such issues before.

I've heard of volcanoes in oceans before (or attached to caverns), but not underneath the oceans surface. So it's kinda new I think.

A Dwarf Fortress Surtseyan eruption! Too bad it won't form an actual island. :(

Then we'll have to engineer one!  Volcano + pump stack = new island FTW!

The last sighting of this phenomenon was back in 40d.
That's a long, long time. Lock this moment in your mind, forever.
