But that wasn't always the case.
Also, it happens to have acquired a name recently.

Folks, explain this to me.

well... critters that kills lots of dwarves get names. Perhaps its the same for war animals? Either that or it has an owner?

Animals get a name when they kill something intelligent (intelligent things get a name for being intelligent).  Everyone gets a longer name at 5 kills.
