[2010] Flooding the cavern
« on: June 10, 2010, 01:52:30 pm »

So I created an artificial waterfall by channeling out a long vertical drop into the cavern and then diverting the river through the area. Works great, dorfs get happy thoughts from the mist. For the past 2 in-game years, the cavern's been flooding with water, but I see that the cavern opens up off the map. When the water reaches that level, will it just flow offscreen and disappear? Is there a danger of the water backing all the way up into the fort itself?

And a bonus unrelated question. Can anything come up through the hole where the water is coming through?

Yeah, water flows out the open edges of the cavern.

As for things coming up, oh yes. Forgotten beasts arrive in the caverns, many have wings, and are more than happy to use whatever means they can find to get in your fort and cause some fun. They generally don't have any issues with swimming underwater for long periods and can move against high pressure flows. However, building destroyers can't destroy things from below, so you can prevent this from happening with some grates.

You can also let the water out via fortifications, which are indestructible to everyone but dwarves. However, forgotten beasts will be able to use ranged attacks, if they have them (well, assuming Toady fixed the "must be able to path to use breath" bug), so you should make sure that the floodgates are far enough to keep your dwarves safe.
