Nice.  I'll try to remember that.  Now I just need a shortcut to get to the address bar.

Try F6. Works here in Chrome. I think it works in IE too. Probably FFox too then.

I don't like ugly toolbars cluttering my work space.
They clash with my theme...
I love how chromes address bar doubles as a search engine. It'll search bing if you want to. Not that you would.

I like how you can configure it with multiple engines and select one with the first word :)

For example, mine's set so if I type "images dwarf" it'll do a google image search for "dwarf" ;)

Firefox has a search bar like that too. You can also add other searches to it, such as Dictionary.com and such.

Yeah, you can basically make the address bar for firefox work like that.  Default setting is "I'm feeling lucky" though, I think.

Actually, IE's had it too since 7. Used to use it quite a bit before I tried FFox and Chrome.

Oddly, the main thing I miss about firefox is the personas... I've looked at chrome's themes, but there's just so little UI to theme...

I settled on Chrome over Firefox because it's faster, and I never really used the plug-ins that firefox is famous for. The experience did addict me to ad-blocking though :)

Apparently, if you type 'Oil Spill' into Google, you get a picture of BP's logo.

And they paid for this.

Actually, they bought up a whole bunch of quick search results.  Supposedly, it's to stave off fleeing investors, because it's supposed to go to a press release about how BP executives have no idea why their stock price dropped by 55% in the last month.  I assume there's some greater plan that I'm not seeing.

When I hit "I'm feeling lucky" for "oil spill", I just got Wikipedia.

The fixed it. Wow...
True, it's gone.
Interesting, I wonder why they removed it.
the 7th most searched thing for a while being how to get rid of it would be plenty of reason.

The problem with google storing your searches (note, they don't only log your search terms but also which link you click on) isn't identity theft, but that large corporations sit on a massive heap of information about you that can be used to create very accurate personal profiles. The information is how Google earns its billions, they don't just use the info to provide better search results, it's primarily for the ad-sense system.

It's more of a right-to-privacy issue than a security issue, and an important one since we don't really know what consequences this kind of rampant data-mining will have in the future. Part of the story is that governments are also getting eager to collect bits of the various electronic data everybody leaves behind in large amounts every day, for instance historical location data from your cell phone good enough to fairly accurately map your movements for the last year or so (or however long your cell provider keeps logs).

Fair enough, but tell me why anyone would care about where you were last weekend? They can figure out where thousands of others were, too. Is it kind of upsetting knowing that the government can find you wherever you may be? I think the better question here is what you've done for it to actually matter where you are at a given time.

I fail to see a problem with the creation of "very accurate personal profiles" -- more targeted advertisements are generally a good thing. A typical multimillion dollar corporation doesn't care about the average Joe's name or face, unless it can make them money.

If the problem is that your deepest darkest searches are revealed to the world, I can only say that the world doesn't care

I don't think he means he has something specific to hide, it's just a bad idea for the government to gain more and more control. A privacy here, a right there, sooner or later big brother could start doing things for their own benefit, not that they necessarily would.

I have no issues with privacy. That which can be destroyed by the truth should be. Anything that makes the world closer to one where everyone is omniscient is a good thing.

I don't entirely agree with this statement...

Such a world would certainly have advantages, but I don't think I'd want to live there...

But we probably shouldn't get into that here; perhaps in a new topic, but not here.
