I am using ethicle now. I dont know if (and in fact doubt that) they make good their promise of planting a tree every 100 searches, but it's worth a try, particularily since they dont load as much clusterfoque as google in my screen

I get automatically redirected to google.co.il so I didn't even notice anything...besides that it sometimes decides to search in Hebrew and I have to tell it who's boss

One of the things I always liked about Google was how fast that simple, white screen loaded.

The pictures?  I thought that was just a daily theme thing?

And when I tried "Change background image", it seemed to want an iGoogle login (or similar, I didn't dwell on the specifics).

Wanting to be more like Bing?  I change as many computers from Bing as default search (TRC toolbar default search thingy) to Google as I can.  Not that I'm particularly happy with Google becoming All Powerful, but I dislike Bing more and don't have a high opinion of any of the other alternative contemporary search engines, and Google might as well take over the world if those are its only opposition...

Anyway, back to the pictures... I always pointed to Google as a nice, clean, uncluttered interface.  Ignoreing the iGoogle/myGgoogle/whatever it is, that is.  So this is spoiling it even further.

Anyway, I usually use my search bar that came with Firefox to search anyhow. That, or Mozilla's version of the Google start screen. Quick load, and ignore frontside stuff.

Ehh...  Sort of, but not really.

Every search engine out there keeps logs of some sort.  Exactly what kind of information gets logged varies from one search engine to another, and from one user to another.

If you're signed up with Google's services, and have enabled them to save your history, they have more data on you.  But it also allows you to look up your own past searches from other computers.

If you're just using their regular front-end all they really have is an IP address, your search terms, and what link you clicked on.  Which is what pretty much every other search provider in the world keeps.  And, unless you're connecting to their secure search, your ISP/boss/whoever has that same information.

As for their retention policy...  I don't know what it is, but I doubt if it is genuinely forever.  Considering the large number of folks hitting Google for search results on a daily basis, I don't think they can retain their logs literally forever.
