So I've been playing this again... (I played a fair bit last year)and running around with as a British County class cruiser...

Its pretty fun, part personal skill based, part grindfest, all random fleets of WWI-WWII ships duking it out with each other.

Free but with one of those stupid item shops but oh well.

Also if you do try it out make sure to read the Navyfield forums, the tips and tactics and national forums especially as its actually got a bit of a learning curve...

Also, if you play, don't let your points get under 50k, they are a bitch to get at the start and Carrier captains have too much to use and are generous about it, so go into a trade area asking for points and after about 20 mins someone will usually show up and give you like  200-500k points, it helps a when leveling sailors at low levels.

Also, I play on the Bismarck Server, the other servers are less populated...

Are there any uses for destroyers and the like or do you just grind till you get a battleship/carrier?
What does the paid for item shop do?

From the gameplay vids I've seen, there looks to be a use for small, fast ships.

Destroyers reveal enemy submarines in the area when they're underwater. So do frigates I think.

Its pretty much all PvP.

There is a lot of grind and you do feel pushed to larger ships, but you aren't really useless.  As said DD/FFs = Dead subs (Subs are dangerous to BBs) At least I don't feel that useless in my county.

Gameplay is basically team deathmatch.

Back when I last used to play this (before subs), DD's were mainly useful for quick hit n' run torpedo volleys. Since most new players are in destroyers, and torpedos are very powerful this lead to quite a lot of gamerooms disabling torpedos. Don't know how it is now, perhaps I should pick it up again.

 I played briefly, again, when subs were first released and though the game was still a massive grindfest with a tunnel on the other side with a CV or BB for you, it was improved greatly with the subs. The addition of subs gave new life to DDs as they became a necessary part of the team, rather than ad-hoc scouts or, very brief, harassers. DDs fill out a niche, much like AA ships like the Emden. Dunno if that observation holds up these days.

I don't know what they did though but its a fair bit less grindy now, if your team wins and you manage to get at least a little attack, you will get like 10k XP, at least, among my level 44ish crewmen in my county.

I played for a good bit getting an SS1 sub and the ship right before the first English battleship the Revenge. I just can't stand the grind, and have never been able to get a good ship

I would, but sadly internet is highly perishable, and the shipping costs can be vicious.
