Death and Funerals
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:21:00 am »

A dead dwarf is placed in his assigned coffin, or a free coffin if one is available.

If a dwarf has friends, they will hold a funeral (party variant) at the coffin. If no friends, the leader will just do his usual "go around consoling everyone". If there's a priest in the fortress, he will trump all other friends / leader and he will hold the funeral instead. This funeral acts as a consolation to reduce the unhappy thoughts regarding the death.

The dwarf in the coffin can be embalmed or mummified any time, requiring a job at the priest's workshop. Embalming requires chemicals made at the alchemist. Mummification requires cloth and either rock salt or limestone.

The magic arc can involve enchanting mummies to help defend the fortress. Embalming might allow creation of zombies and both prevent corpse decay. But you don't need the magic arc to implement priests - we do just fine in real life with priests who cannot call lightning or summon booze.

Additionally, dwarves who have strong personalities would come back as ghosts if left unburied. But some civs prefer embalming, some prefer mummification, and get less of an unhappy thought at the death if the appropriate procedure goes through.
Furthermore, some civs prefer to be buried on a dirt tile, some prefer a stone tile, others must be buried on a grass tile. Maybe require a glass or metal floor?
If these burial procedures are done according to that the civ likes, there's a much lower chance that the ghost will come out and no chance that it'll be angry.

I suggest to turn the philosopher to priest noble in this situation. Because it's not easy just to become a "priest", or maybe make it an assigned profession like sheriff when your village reaches a certain number of inhabitants.

Sounds like a fun way to help stop those ridiculous death spirals...

Can a Legendary High Priest have the ability to tame (convert) trapped goblins?

This is more related to dungeon master I think.
Though a legendary priest can be a good booost for those unhappy dwarves who try to meet the mayor and complain. The priest could work as a professional "emotional shield" (along with philosopher) plus a funeral holder.

Well, then how about adopting orphaned children?  My only Baby's Momma just died in battle and the poor thing's wandering around the fort being ignored.

Orphanages are run by the clergy of course.

I'm imagining appointing a cleric at around 40, who later gets upgraded to priest at 80 and bishop at 120, maybe cardinal at 160.
Oh, and the equivalent of fortress guard, the clergy, who are monks. Need 1 monk per 20 people, starting at 80.
What do the clergy do?
1. Funerals (Makes deaths less sad)
2. Weddings (Makes them more happy)
3. Copying obscure religious texts into newer tomes. (i.e. nothing but train their clerical skill, just like the fortress guard)

Also once you become the mountain homes you should get the dwarven pope.
I was thinking that there should be a church designated from either a new piece of furniture called an alter or a table. At the church the current priest would occasionally give sermons which would be like parties but people would want to sit so you would need lots of chairs in the church.

Great, a sermon is like a party except:
1. You have to provide seating for your dwarves
2. People hate sitting in church, so they wont get happy thoughts
3. Your dwarves wont build social skills, only Mr. Priest does.
4. Dwarves are looked down on if they DON'T skip out on work.

In short, dwarven sermons more or less suck.

That depends on the religion. I doubt a service to Armok would consist of a solemn congregation to hear a sermon and recite hymnals.
