Gobbledeegook keys
« on: June 07, 2010, 04:38:20 pm »

I've searched this on the bug tracker but got nothing, so I thought I might ask here to see if there's anything obvious I've missed.

My fiance has been trying to play the new DF but the keys aren't what they say they are. e doesn't embark, ctrl does. This is happening all over the place and she can't even get past the embark screen.

so, knowledgeable people of DF, what's going on?

What OS are you running, and what region/language are you using?

Well, I'm running Mac OS X, but I don't think that's the question you meant to ask :D

She's running Vista (shudders) in English.

But srsly, try rearranging the keys in the key bindings. Maybe it'll get your comp to realize which keys are which.

The computer/OS already knows which keys are which, or else they wouldn't be able to type.

He means in-game press esc -> scroll down to key bindings -> change the key bindings

And be sure to press the "save to TXT" button. Also check the actual text file in the DF directory.

I know, but I doubt the key bindings are messed up if they haven't been altered post-install, and it's obvious the OS itself is interpreting keystrokes properly, so something odd's going on, especially if the keyboard layout is set to US.

Huh.  I actually encountered this once when playing DF on one of the school computers off of a USB.  I just moved to the next computer over and it worked fine.  It made no sense though, as all those computers are ghosted off of the same disk weekly, and pretty much identical.

So I'm afraid I can't help, but I can confirm it can happen at least.

Is she on a laptop, or using one of those crappy keyboards with the 'soft-keys?' If it's a laptop/notebook/etc.. check that numlock or the LT's soft-key switch is in the correct state. There is a 'Fn' button on mine (Fn == Function) and if I should accidentally hit it twice, it locks.

A good point, but I wouldn't think it would affect the "e" key...

I second changing the key-bindings in-game.
