Because North Korea found a cure for old age! Well, it just prevents skin and brain aging for now, but I'm sure their scientists will make it work for all the other organs in no time at all.
Quote
North Korea has developed a "super drink" that, it says, can multiply brain cells and stop skin ageing.

The secretive state's official news agency, KCNA, says the drink contains 60 kinds of "microelements" extracted from more than 30 species of plants.

It attracted "much interest from Chinese, German and other businessmen" at a trade fair in Pyongyang last month, the agency reports.

It was developed by a joint venture fruit juice company.
'No side-effect'

KCNA says: "It, with effects of both preventive and curative treatment, helps improve mental and retentive faculties by multiplying brain cells.

"It also protects skin from wrinkles and black spots and prevents such geriatric diseases as cerebral haemorrhage, myocardium and brain infarction by removing acid effete matters in time.

"It, much higher than quality cosmetics in anti-oxidation capacity, is efficacious for different skin diseases, including allergic dermatitis. It also makes skin fair.

"The drink has no side-effect."

The agency quotes a company manager, Jong Song Ho, as saying the drink has "proved efficacious among workers of such industrial establishments as thermal power station and smeltery and at medical institutions".

Excuse me while I replace a fuse in my skepticismograph.
This is North Korea after all.

Wait, it "Makes skin fair" and "Has no side effects"?  Uh, wouldn't that end up bleaching your skin?

I'm betting it only works for North Koreans. Anyone else drinking it, especially Caucasians, can expect their skin to melt off.

God, with all these shady, ill explained technological advances from a country so ground down under the heel of an oppressive ruler that it'd probably have trouble inventing a straw, time travel is going to be along any day now.

Then we can have a thread labeled "Kim Jong Il! He'll be back."

Yeah I find this kind of hard to believe.

North Korea came up with this? Seriously?

Looks like North Korea has taken a page from TV Tropes.

I believe in the soviet people's republic!

Their press releases are the best in the whole world, basically. Glorious leader wrestles sharks, forces them to make peace with the merpeople! However, Merpeople declare war on North Korea after being corrupted by capitalist dogs! Glorious leader mournfully disposes of tainted merpeople and bestows their technological wonders upon the workers of the nation! Glory to the workers!

Well, that's it.  The DPRK high command has officially lost their marbles, and become a crazy 1960s supervillain enclave.  Where's the man from U.N.C.L.E. when you need him?

Yea, theres alot of details missing, like the name of the juice company, plus saying no side effects twice is suspicious in itself and says that they haven't tested it.

The whole catalog of stuff that it cures makes it sound like a cure-all and therefore, is 'Snake Oil'

Heres one from the Times: http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/06/04/be-smarter-stop-aging-all-with-north-koreas-super-drink/

I tried looking all over for the company that is mentioned in there and I can't find any reference other than news. At least for english sites.

Oh yea, this is the exact same article (with a bit of variation) all over the place. Maybe they should work on getting people to take them seriously rather than spouting propoganda.

Edit: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gvPHzQ1SRBtWlsbBd7yT07aECG4g

From the AFP page, it says that its a state owned company (not suspicious in itself) and they also make flavored carbonated water.

It certainly sounds like it.
