Dwarfy or Profitable?
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:21:26 pm »

For example, I can make a ton of profit on clothesmaking with my legendary clothier but I've spent a lot of time hauling around gold nuggets because it felt like the dwarfy thing to do.  I still have plenty of things to trade with, so why not?

If randomly executing a dwarf once a season counts as dwarfy then I'm all for dwarfy.

Many would argue that Dwarfy and Profitable are the same thing.

Now that I think of it, the Ferengi are pretty dwarfy.

Well, aside from stonecrafting, the other dwarfy trade goods (like a gold ring with every gem in existence studded on it and wrapped with every metal in existence) are very profitable. It's more a question of whether you strictly stay within those dwarfy industries or make your major export something else (like Masterwork Roasts of Sweet Pod products).

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

You'd think so, but roofing off the sky is very dwarfy, and not at all profitable. Well, it ramps up your total fort value, at least.

cloth industry would seem to be the best long term idea, you have virtually unlimited pig tails and dimple cups you can grow, dimple dyed clothed should be worth something, especially if you used a dimple dyed thread to sew an image into it so lets reveiw

dye, thread, image and dye, thread, yeah should be decently valuable

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

I just have my craftwarves constantly produce stonecrafts and then have them engraved with gems. It's worked so far, allowing me to get anything I want from a trader and still have plenty of leftover goods.

So maybe it's not the most dwarfy method of making a profit, but it's been reliable so far. Which is more than I can for most of the other things I do.

I consistently have made 1000+ value cloth items from rope reeds, with a mix of the dye types.  A legendary weaver and a legendary clothier mixed with a few adept dyers lead to high value stuff.

It's almost like all of my dwarfs are dressed in high 80's fashion.

You don't even need to make the cloth into anything. A legendary weaver gathering up spider webs and making cave spider silk cloth, even just plain cloth, will still be enough to buy out entire caravans.

Just build a bunch of looms and bins. Be sure to wall off the caves to protect your weavers, and just let them do their thing.

I also only export stuff I don't want.

Cloth? Traders can have all of the cloth they want! I don't want it. I regularly order piles of it to be dumped in magma or atom smashed just to tidy up the fortress.

The gems and metal, and gem enctrusted metal objects? I'm keeping those.  :D

Cloth and stonecrafts are just too easy.  I trade things made out of precious materials only, so gold, silver and gem crafts spattered with every gem I have access to.  I just imagine a big ball of gems all glued together, with a silver ring at its core.  For smaller denominations I trade back the animal blood barrels the traders bring me.

I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this fort any more. Migrants arrive, they die for some reason, the fort is flooded for another reason, then dwarves go mad, more dwarves die and I'm just laughing in my distress.
