Too many creatures have a speed of 1000

Giving most creatures the same default speed can lead to epic (i.e. endless) chases

This Titan has been chasing the adjacent elephant around the map for half an hour.  That's 1/2 hour at about 30fps with a huge fortress on a fast computer. The other two elephants have more or less remained in formation for some reason.

While the implied suggestion here is that creatures be given different speeds, perhaps a better suggestion is that creatures either get tired of running flat out and thus slow over time, or that there be a random element to speed (+/- 5% say) for each cycle, or other such things.  Because the problem will just pop up again once enough creatures are added, which according to the devs, will happen when wizards are implemented...

The titan chase kept going for another 1/2 hour before he got killed by Goblins. Now a hydra is chasing a warthog around the map.

Having [SPEED:] and [SIZE:] tags interact would ease this problem (and a seperation of the movement/attack speeds to solve the problems this solution creates) but until that update comes, you could modify each creature to have a unique speed number; 999, 1000, 1001, etc
That way each creature would eventually be run down by something.

the problem is animals never seem to get tired just by walking around. In fact in adventure more moving around cures fatigue.

Everything should have a run and walk speed. Run for combat, walk for just lounging around.

If you run you get tired eventually.

Some creatures would simply never get tired, like mud men or brass titans because they dont have muscles in the traditional sense.

How 'bout the terrain could affect your speed?

Even moreso, perhaps certain creatures could favor certain terrain. Such as dwarves and other cave creatures would favor stone terrain (while other creatures would be a bit slow in it)

The effects would be rather minuscule in most cases, though, of course. Exceptions to a small penalty would be like... mud, or water (the latter of which I hope to see a Swimming skill in it for creatures that both aren't amphibious and don't "favor" it (the latter of which would do well to simulate creatures that can swim naturally, but cannot actually breath underwater))

[EDIT] Also, now that I think of it, perhaps Size should lessen such terrain-based penalties, if only a little.
