I Hate Captcha Images
« on: June 03, 2010, 04:35:59 am »

I hate captcha images. 90% of the time they confound me (the messed up zig zaggy multi-coloured ones, for the most part), simply because they're so stupidly done they're next to unreadable. They don't even stop spambots from signing up to sites.

I'm not colourblind, but I do wear glasses. I've just spent about five minutes being confounded by a set of captcha images that were next to unreadable. Redoing the image changes it, too, so I can't even piece together what a word might be over multiple images. Really piss me off, and they don't even do what they're meant to do!

How do you all feel about them?

I don't have much problem with them. They are kind of an inconvenience but I can put up with it if it helps keep spam away from the sites I use. I don't know how effective they are though so I can't really argue about that.

Once in a while I'll have to reload a page because of them, but that's about it. I don't see them often though.

Some of them suck, mostly the ones with nondescript letters.
"IS THAT LINE A 1, l, OR I?
GODS DAMMIT, IT WASN'T WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS.

Oh, good, new image.
BUT I HAVE TO REENTER MY PASSWORD, EMAIL, AND CHECK THE T&A BOX AGAIN.

The awful ones are the ones that have both capital and lowercase letters and 0s that look like Os.

The awful ones are the ones that jumble them on top of each other. Dislike, and they're damn pointless most of the time. Not so much having to read them, but for those browser games where I have to write them down to access every page. Also, most of the sites that use them force you to write a really long password and force you to type the captcha if you mistype that password.

I'm tempted to write a program that actually breaks down these captchas so people will stop using them. Meh, I'll do a PhD/masters thesis on it, then file a patent for it if I ever do. Might as well get some academic credit for it.

Do you not realize that this is going on on a daily basis? People trying to break captchas is par for the course, or else they'd never get bypassed. It's an arms race kind of deal. Don't expect to come up with some kind of magical super-algorithm to break every single type of captcha that ever exists or could exist - you can't.

I actually find reCaptcha to be quite bearable.
Occasionally funny due to the ever watchful eye of Arenji.

I suspect that the hardest part of writing a program for it is to simply find and eliminate any background additions. Preprogramming it for one particular one would be the easy solution to that...

However, then the codes would get crafty and rely on instructions like "only enter the letters" or "there is no o, only 0" so that the full page is needed to be processed, and maybe even the page before, depending on where extra instructions are located.

I suggest doing it the other way around, or else your patent gets rejected due to your own thesis :P

Anyway, don't most captcha's have sound as well as letters as an alternative for those with reading problems?

It's less annoying, sure. But still pisses me off when I get it wrong.

Then how does the human mind analyse it?
If we can analyse it we can make a computer do the same.

As this thread is showing, sometimes the human brain can't :P

In theory, yes, we could. That doesn't mean it's easy, or even feasible given current technology.

Of course, some captchas have been broken, like I just said. The issue isn't so much breaking a single captcha, it's breaking all of them despite their subtle (or not so subtle) differences.
