Parker's position as an upper working class white person is important to his story. There are black Marvel heroes (mostly from the 70s). Why not just use Green Lantern, or one of the superheroes who actually do have multiple incarnations?

Because it's impossible for a black person to be upper working class in this day and age?

Because it's impossible for a black family to be upper working class in this day and age?

Reread his statement. He said that him being an upper working class white person is important - so while a black family could easily be upper working class, they literally can't be upper working class white people. For reasons that should be obvious.

Then he could have excised everything but the race of Parker.

And I'll still need some elaboration, I can't remember Peter Parker doing anything patently white.

Unless we're going into Stereotypeland.

"Upper" working class?  He lives in a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn (?) with his semi-retired aunt, working as an odd-job shoestring reporter.

Y'know, aside from the nerd part, he could be black.  Make him a hip NPR contributor or something.  Aside from that whole 60-year-old legacy character thing.

He would also fit into a different sociological category if he was an upper working class black person. His origin story and his motivations are dependent upon his background. A black Peter Parker would have entirely different experiences and motivations as is inherent with his position in society.

I keep getting ninja'd trying to post this:

Peter Parker's background with his Uncle and Aunt are upper working class, maybe closer to middle.

Then again, being an African American trying to enter the workforce with an erratic boss would also alter the situation.

His whole push was uncle Ben getting straight shot up while Peter was in the library. Are you saying black people don't read?

The driving force of Peter Parker is something anyone can sympathize with. It's one of many reasons the character is so popular.

Spiderman being black doesn't interfere with the fact he feels like he needs to avenge Uncle Ben by fighting crime.

Spiderman being black doesn't interfere with the fact he has a job as photographer.

Spiderman being black doesn't interfere with the fact he has a nerdy alter ego.

Spiderman being black doesn't interfere with the fact he is in love with Mary Jane and/or Gwen

What's the problem?

Alright, in an effort to further perpetuate this unresolvable disagreement using a insultingly simplistic analogy:

Let's say they made a Lassie adaptation. Except instead of a collie, they cast lassie as a beagle. It's not an change to the integral core of the character, Lassie can still be a dog and run around and save Timmy and shit. Does that make it an arbitrary distinction? No. Lassie is a fucking collie.

A beagle is a smaller dog. Lassie as a Golden Retriever instead of a Collie would be a better metaphor.

I also would have no problem with that.

I would certainly have a problem with that. As previously stated, Lassie is a fucking collie. Lassie not being a collie shows slack and a lack of devotion to the original art on the part of the producers.
