Hey guys I was thinking they should make a Will Smith biopic about the difficult decision he had to make between Wild Wild West and The Matrix. I've got a great new idea though, lets get an actor to play him who isn't black! In this day and age why does Will Smith have to be a black guy?

I'm thinking either Tony Jaa or Malcolm Mcdowell.

Tony Jaa would make a fantastic Will Smith. It's like his bionic arm in I Robot, except Tony Jaa has a bionic body.

But can he top Italian Spiderman?

NO ONE can top Italian Spiderman. Not even Japanese Spider-Man.
I'm pretty sure there was a Turkish Spiderman who got a hamster to eat someone's eyes, but I'm not sure even that competes.

I guess the Nick Fury reboot raises a good point. That worked out well, but Nick Fury is less...iconic than Spiderman, I guess. I don't think it's racist to cast a preexisting character as the race that character is. It bugs me when hollywood whitewashes characters that are supposed to be another race, and it bugs me when they tokenize too. I'd still watch the movie though. Wouldn't bother me that much.

We need a jewish or ginger superhero.

Thing and Kitty Pryde are both Jewish. Jimmy Olsen is ginger, but he's not so much a superhero as just  kinda a dick.

Magneto is Jewish too, but the whole hero part could use some work. To be fair, Magneto does what he does having seen attempted genocide first hand, so the sympathy factor is high.

The Nick Fury reboot was because Nick Fury in the marvel Ultimate universe is black (and is blatantly meant to be Samuel L Jackson or at least based on him... Which is probobly why they chose that Fury for the movies) It's not like they just randomly decided to change one characters race for no reason, the entire universe is different.

I don't really see how that forbids Peter Parker being anything but white. One could argue both that the movie universe is equally 'different' and that choosing to change Nick's race was random there. It's silly to say one character can be reimagined as a different race but another can't, assuming race is irrelevant to the character, and the whole point of this "Donald Glover as Spidey" thing is showing that many fans don't think race is relevant.

Will Smith was originally supposed to be Neo in The Matrix.

Man that would have been a different movie.

AND JEAN RENO AS AGENT SMITH...nerdgasm

Whoa whoa whoa I missed this the first time around. God damn would that ever be amazing.

But although the sequels were weak, I liked how they cast a personality-less actor as the lead. Apparently it was intentional, too. Zing, Keanu.

Original Universe Nick Fury is White.
Ultimate Universe Nick Fury is Black Samuel L. Jackson.

Original Universe Peter Parker is White.
Ultimate Universe Peter Parker is White.
Almost Every Alternate Peter Parker is White.

This potental change makes no sense. It won't work. Peter Parker is and always has been a walking white nerd stereotype.

I do wonder if Will Smith would have made a good Neo, though. The Matrix was before he started going Happylogist on us, so it could have worked out.

They chose to change Furys race because they had two characters to pick from, one who was a grizzled white guy, and the other was Samuel L Jackson. It's not really random. You have one option that is guaranteed to be a box office draw and another that requires much more work for potentially much less payoff. It's not like theres an alternate marvel universe where spiderman IS Will Smith or Jackie Chan or whoever.

What's the big deal? He is the better actor, he deserves the part.

Right, this is what I'm talking about - it's 'not random' for Nick Fury to be black in the movies because he's already black in the comics (or one universe, anyways). But what about before Ultimate NF was created and made black? How is that not seen as a random change but Peter Parker is?

They chose to change Furys race because they had two characters to pick from, one who was a grizzled white guy, and the other was Samuel L Jackson. It's not really random. You have one option that is guaranteed to be a box office draw and another that requires much more work for potentially much less payoff. It's not like theres an alternate marvel universe where spiderman IS Will Smith or Jackie Chan or whoever.

So you're saying they changed his race in the comics to get a bigger box office draw in film adaptations? All right, then why can't Peter Parker be another box office drawing black actor?

Well, for one thing, the guy they have suggested now is a nobody. And in all honesty? What I've seen him do isn't all that good.

He is less of a nobody then the other actors.
