In this day and age, why does Spiderman have to be heterosexual? Or a man? Or American? Or not a pirate? I vote for black-lesbian-British-pirate-Spiderman. Who's with me? Also, Arab-American Captain America.

Credit where credit's due, though, Don Glover would be a pretty great black spiderman.

The name Uncle Ben would have odd implications for a black spiderman. :|

To those saying "Peter Parker should be white because he's always been white," I think you may be missing the point.
Very well. Then I say the next Iron Man Film Reboot should have Tony Stark be a Korean woman who does selfless charity work. See how that sounds stupid? Once a character has been defined, you cannot just go changing the core apperance and traits of said character.

Well yes, when we're discussing ethnicity and not gender nor personality/traits, it does sound stupid to bring them up. I'm not trying to say 'Spiderman must be black from now on in order to be trendy,' I'm agreeing with Josephus' comment:

The implication is that his race is irrelevant to the concept of Spider-Man.

I'm not against recasting a white guy. But if they choose a black guy or a Korean guy or whoever, I'm not against it either (so long as they look the part and have acting chops; this Donald Glover guy didn't impress me).

I'd say only if his race is integral to the character or story. A white Malcolm X would be a bit strange. I was pleasantly surprised at Will Smith's portrayal of Robert Neville in I am Legend even if it betrayed it's own title in the end thus ruining the film for me.

edit to add: I don't know if Peter Parker's race is integral to his character, I've not read the comics.

When it comes to re-imagining superheroes there's two things that I think should never be changed. Sexuality and gender. Like, how the new Batgirl is a lesbian. What? Why would you make her a lesbian? Did Batman go around boning girls all the time? Did Batgirl go around boning men? Why does her sexual preferences suddenly need to be addressed? It was a non-issue before and the kids aren't going to care what Batgirl does in her off time until puberty, and even then, there's an internet for that.

So yeah. Those are the two things that I think should never be changed. But skin color? It's not integral to who Spiderman is, so I think that that's fine, but I don't think it should be a big deal. I totally agree with what Duke said. Make the casting open to everyone, if you want to be diverse or make a statement about being diverse. This smacks of "Oh man but black people are awesome, you're so racist how come we can't have a black Spiderman let's cast a black Spiderman to show how wrong you are racist!" If he's good, cast him. If he's not, don't. Don't just cast a black person because they're a black person. That's stupid reasoning.

But yeah, I'd be cool if this guy got in provided he's a good actor. Plus, no matter how silly you think he might look, nothing can beat the stupidity of some of Toby's expressions.

I don't think this Donald Glover guy is that good, though. Chris Rock would be an amazing Spiderman.

This is truth.

Also, I think I'd've preferred to stare at Will Smith's arse in the third movie rather than Keanu Reeve's.

Will Smith wouldn't have stood for some of those scenes. He'd have read the rave bit and then broke some faces to get it changed.

Will Smith is awesome.

Everyone keep quoting it until some studio picks up the idea for a remake or a sequel.

For the record, I was totally cool with Nick Fury being relaunched as a black guy.  Not least because Sam Motherfucking Jackson was the character basis.  The only reason I'd be worried about Spiderman being black is because the writing would make an issue of it, i.e. he'd be over the top 90's style hip black.

Oh God, I hadn't thought of writers stereotyping him. If the guy is cast, pray they have enough sense not to do that.
