Magma Pumping.
« on: June 02, 2010, 06:46:46 pm »

Never tried pumping before.
Simply because I've never needed to, or never understood tutorials.

So I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to pump magma from 161z levels down, up to around 0 or 3z levels.
Spoiler: This is what I want (click to show/hide)

Ok pumping is very intimidating at first. I only recently found out how to actually make these. what you want to do is make a pump stack for the magma. This should be on the wiki. Make sure that you have more than just one storage tile, because for your first pump system you will probably hand pump it.

This is a good issue to consult the wiki with,.

The wiki just writes out what we're going to say to you in slightly different words ;) This is the page you want - it's a basic primer on screw pumps, how they work, what they need to be made of, etc. The last section of the article details how to make a pump stack, which you can make as tall as you like. It goes into how to power them from the surface without using a whole bunch of mechanisms (manual pumping magma tends to lead to singed dwarves the first few times in my experience :P). The pictures, felt-tip and all, are a great help visualising what you need to get the magma moving.

Reinforce what you learn by reading with simple practice projects. Start a new fort just so you're not distracted with everything else and embark with lots of materials. Build 1 screw pump and empty a single murky pool out into the surrounding lands - you don't need to do any digging to do this. Dig a room and build a dwarven perpetual motion power generator (waterwheels + screw pump, see wiki). Link this power generator to some screw pump elsewhere to empty another murky pool. Now you that you know how pumping, power generation and power transmission work, you can understand the wiki on how to build a pump stack.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I've never tried pumping over 100 z-levels, but I understand that this is going to drain your FPS big time while it is at work. Just so you don't get surprised.

You're probably also going to need large power generators, which the wiki is a bit lacking on last I checked.  However, if you search "perpetual motion machines" or "power generators" on the forums, you should come up with plenty of material on how people approach that problem.  The method I used was taking advantage of any water tile connected to a brook automatically having flow, allowing for a water wheel farm.  (40d)

Basically you just need a pump stack, which is a tower of pumps built on top of each other, alternating directions every z level.  Also, bust a hole through the floor of each level, under where the EDIT: UNPASSABLE tile of the pump is going to go.  So it should look like this:

z3:  +.+.
z2:  .+.+
z1:  +.+.

and then with pumps:

z3: +%%.
z2: .%%.
z1: +%%.

As for powering the whole mess, you need waterwheels 1z above water thats flowing due to flow, and not pressure.  Experiment with how to do that, and when you get a system that works never touch it again and make a bunch more. There are some posts about that stuff somewhere around here and on the wiki, but basically you need water flowing (not due to pressure) under a waterwheel.
