That's how I breach magma pipe. A look from the side:

The idea is to use the floor grates so that your dwarf has more time to escape.

Smoothing out the side of the pipe and carving fortifications works better. Just have stairs right next to it and nobody should be burned alive. and if somebody does get burned alive, it can just be some useless engraver.

Yeah, fortifications are awesome, my problem with this method of magmatapping is that you only get one tile of access which sucks for demanding applications. You still need to pumpstack the ocean at some point.

Channeling from the top works, and is perfectly safe if done properly.

This is for "discovery" - for piping, the second floor would have a tunnel in it for magma piping

Magma heats up the floors above and below it now so remember to dig your magma piping tunnels so they don't run under your walkway tunnels.

The channeling from the top works as you describe IFF you are at the top, rather than somewhere more useful in the middle. The problem about top access is that you only have 1 layer of magma to work with (barring waiting on refill).

That's just for finding the magma. It should be easy to tell, based on the location of warm stone walls, where the magma pipe is so that you can reveal it without endangering yourself.

That method works for filling pipes that you dig too, just dig the piping, then channel the edge from above to flood it.

I played around a bit more and found an easier way. The idea is similar but instead of grate, you can simply dig out some stairs.
