Backyard Monsters
« on: May 30, 2010, 03:24:05 pm »

Being bored and all, I decided to make a topic about a reletively new game, Backyard Monsters. The name is cheesy and all, but it has something going for it, a nonbrowser game that has some pretty good RTS elements to it. Plus, it works on dial-up. :)

As you can see, I have a defencive layout of towers, booby traps, and blocks. Battles occur in real time(monsters actually attacking and ect). When attacking, you choose where to "fling"(ie drop) your monsters(if its not close to a building), and your monsters control themselves from there. You choose how many monsters and which kinds to fling, and you can do multible flings. Your monsters have preferences, which they then use to choose what kind of buildings to target. All of your monsters are predesigned, for now. Once the game is out of beta it will have a creature designer. Finely, you only have a limited number of monsters at one time(this increases as your base grows, since you build more housing), so just spamming will typically not work . There is also a level system, which prevents you from getting smothered by guys who have been playing for months.

Now for the bad. Its on facebook(sadly, I had to get an account to play it), you can use shiney to get boosts(but shiney costs a lot, and it costs exponentially more as your base grows and you buy upgrades. Plus, you get a ton of free shiney in the begining. In the end, shiney doesnt really effect gameplay too much later on, and the developers have to make money somehow), and the game is still in beta, so its rougn around the edges( but that also means there is a lot of current development).

Oh, did I mention buildings are animated? :)

Also, I can throw up some more pictures if you guys like.

Linky: - This should work hopefully without going to my facebook account. =/

It's times like these I

1. Regret idly clicking through the Other Games forum here
2. Enjoy annexing my parents' Facebook account
3. love the "Close Enough" tool (Finishes a building instantly at no Shiny cost if the time left dips below 5 minutes)

Sort of.

I guess it could be said its an expanded TD game, since there are no "defined" paths, your support buildings take up large amounts of space and are hard to defend, you have limited amount of towers, and you can attack other people(choosing where to place your guys).

The only thing im disapointed with is the fact you cant use units to defend your base. =/

It was one of those rude awakenings. A long time ago I got a Facebook account because it was starting to be the sort of thing you did.

I saw that there were tons upon TONS on games and I was like "Wow!" but upon playing them I found out that they were almost all complete garbage and the ones that weren't that were at least lesser versions of better games. Better yet many games are clones of eachother.

I played Backyard monster... It wasn't all that special to me. Though at least it wasn't a game that forced neighbours on you.

Also yes you CAN use monsters to defend your own base... They added the "Monster Bunker" a while ago.

Yea, that should be put in the title, don't you think?

What is sad is that essentially Farmville is the "Old great classic" of Facebook games. The newer ones try to put even further arbitrary limits on you.

I'm sick of Facebook-this, Facebook-that. I don't have a Facebook account, nor do I want one. Sometimes I wonder if I'm broken or something, since the whole universe and each hydrogen particle within it has a page.

Half the promotions I see lately involve "Get a free/cheap/early/special X now! Just 'Like' us on Facebook!" or some variation thereof. Do not want.

Sad story short: I will not be trying this game.

Sigh, I don't even play this anymore. The game was interesting at first(partly because it was made by casual collective, so I had high hopes), but in the end theres not much deeper strategy in flinging monsters.

I should probably just lock this. It was made about 11 months ago and its not creating anything productive besides Facebook hate.

Also, its nothing like Farmville(from what I've seen of it anyway, I never played farmville out of principle). At least play the game before criticising it.

Heh, Casual Collective. I had deep ties with MPDTD's creator, but lost interest in the site. Flash Games only go so far.
