On the archery skill:
When you are trying to hit a target with a projectile, there are certain things that remain constant. It does not matter whether you're using a rock, a knife, a spear, a bullet, a bolt, an arrow.
You have to be able to estimate and intuitively understand the range to your target with good accuracy. This is much harder than most people realize until they try, especially the second part. You have to judge the motion of the target relative to the motion of yourself and that of any objects in the area that might interfere. You need to judge the speed and direction of the wind, and consider any difference in elevation between you and your target.
You have to do all this in the split second it takes to nock and loose an arrow, hurl a rock, or shoulder your weapon and pull the trigger. In combat, you have to do all these things while simultaneously keeping awareness of your comrades in arms, the enemies trying to kill you other than the one you're shooting, all while being assaulted by noise and smell few if any of us can comprehend.
This is the archer skill. Maybe the amount of bonus it gives needs adjusting, but the skill itself fills a very real role.
