It's very normal for shogun 2 to take ages to load.

Has anyone here tried Republic on fall of the samurai? I'm thinking of going Republican on my legendary Tsu campaign. I've been camping Kyoto for 40 odd turns building up my strength, softening up my neighbours until I can strike. I'll probably go down in flames but at least it'll be fun.

I just hate the third age tw garrison script, but the mod is awesome  :P

You can totally remove that script.

the garrison was good and made sense in medieval and shogun. but they added elites and waay too much of them. sadly you can only remove it and not just restore the original, for some reason.

I gave it a go. I had my border towns garrisoned pretty well and I had super armies in place to take 5 or so cities when I wanted to attack. I only managed to capture three of them, but the other massive armies survived for long enough to just wait them out instead. The main thing was trying to get into a corner so you only have to push one way, once you've managed that, you win.

I'm not sure if this has been asked already, but is it possible to make the game load before hell freezes over?

I really enjoy the game. I love the combat, the maneuvers, and the 'shameful display' that often results from armies composed of ashigaru. But the load times... they've turned me off the game completely.

It's not just irritating or annoying, it's down right ridiculous. It takes a good 5-10 minutes before the main menu loads. I really do want to play the game, but if it takes that long for me to load the game itself, not to mention the utterly absurd loading for even small-scale battles, I'd rather play something else.

I havent had problems of that scale with load times since the first few days when the game was just out, but my computer is quite new. How old is your computer? I don't really know any easy way of reducing load times, regrettably.

Are you playing the base game or the Fall of samurai, I ony have the base game and rise of samurai dlc.

EDIT: What DirectX are you using? Try DX9 in the options if you arent already using that.

My computer's relatively new, but it's not top of the line.

I've got the DLC, but I haven't played it yet. I only play the regular game at the moment.

I don't know if it helps but I can explain why Total War games take so long to load on start up.

Basically, many of the textures in the more recent games are higher resolution and thus have to be very seriously compressed. They basically have two choices for approaching this situation:

A) Make the game have to load the appropriate textures every time you go into a battle or load the world map. This results in longish loading times every loading screen.

B) Make one giant loading time at the start to load every texture in the game and have the individual loading screens load less intensive stuff.

They went with B, something I kinda agree with. You'd probably see the same thing in Rome 2 as well unless you upgrade to an SSD or something along those lines.

oh come on you're just making things up, you won't be able to load more than what your ram can hold, ever.

and that won't explain the stupid long load time when the game starts AND when the campaign starts AND when the battle starts/stops.

aaand you can actually see the texture loading happening when you load a new game if you pay attention to the map textures are loaded after the renderer is started, not on the loading bar.

I just shifted Shogun over to my SSD.

So there's a few problems fixed.

That is simply not possible.  The HDD displacement for basic Shogun 2 is 32 GB, which is mostly textures... yet the game runs on austere graphics settings with 1 GB of RAM in XP.  Also, most computers these days don't have that much RAM, even gaming-focused rigs rarely clear 16 GB.

You guys realize that sometimes not every word in people's sentences are to be taken completely literally right? And that when your father says he hates every day of your existence, he doesn't actually mean he hates EVERY day of your existence.

Even if they didn't load ALL the textures down to the blotches on your general's pimples in his right inner rectum on the main loading screen, the fact remains that the biggest thing that affects your starting load time is the texture quality.

If you're somehow so skeptical, then take a stopwatch. Change texture quality to low. Time starting load screen. Then time the load screen for battles. Change texture quality to high. Time starting load screen and battles. What you'll find is a very significant increase in load times for the initial load, but only marginal load times for battle loading times.

Why is this mechanically possible? How would I know. If you guys can explain in detail I'm not going to stop you.
