Apparently a battle map editor is being released in the next few minutes.  That's kinda cool, eh?

Nifty.

That's been my major issue with the Total War series: It's obvious they use some sort of map editor to make everything, but they don't make a public version. I'd love the ability to mod new campaigns and stuff into the game without all the hassle of figuring out how modding works.

I've recently bought Fall of the Samurai (which is great and oddly enough seemingly much bigger and worthwhile than terribad Empire), and am thinking of going Republican in the campaign. This would of course result in everyone declaring war on you and focusing on you pretty much alone, even your lifelong allies and vassals, as well as dissolving all your Imperial or Shogunate-unique troops. I'm fairly sure I would only die horribly.

Anyhow, any tips?

(Also, goddamnit, vassals are such a pain in the ass. You'd think they'd be good for daimyo honour, but they're pretty much the sole reason mine has low honor! Specifically, my allies keep attacking them and it's not worth it to defend them.)

I'd suggest Getting yourself into a corner and declaring the republic from there. Then all you have to do is sweep across the map with stacks that you should have built for the occasion and get yourself into a decent position from there.

Definitely get into a corner or an easily defensible position. It's no joke getting blockaded nonstop, so you also need a lot of powerful navies. Republicans don't get any good units like Shogitai or Tosa Riflemen, so you're going to have to go with cheap spammy units. Don't even build these units for that matter because you lose them the moment you switch. Aizu is good for this with their assload of cheap but powerful riflemen that stay with you after you betray everyone.

And make sure you have a large amount saved up. You will have no income for a good long time.

To be honest, an army with some foreign riflemen and line infantry that knows how to kneel will win almost any battle. Especially if you charge cav during an exchange, the AI gets confused.

Wasn't the editor released last month? This is kinda old news...At any rate, I have heard something about the latest patch screwing up mods, (stuff like bows makign rifle sounds) something CA has been slow to fix, so while it is admirable that they finally released something approaching the oft-promised mod tools, their current games still have a long time to go before they are approaching something I would term 'modder friendly'. Other TW games such as Rome do have map editors already. I know, because I have used them. It says soemthing about CAs love of the modding community that they have been dragging their feet on the last couple of games to offer any sort of modding support.

That's what I was referring to when I said "nifty".

It doesn't have a Campaign Map Editor, though, which is what I'd really want.

There's a maaaajor difference between development tools fit for use in-house and development tools fit for public release.

One of those "old pixel-mine rules" is, anything you plan to release will take three times as long to develop as it would of to hack it together in all it's undocumented, unoptimised and buggy glory for in-house usage. It's not unheard of for such map editors to have buttons from old now-removed features that essentially cause the program to halt and catch fire, because removing that 'feature' would take too much time.

Also the 'map editor' for the old Total War games was Photoshop, which is why they were so moddable. They had to roll out in-house tools as the complexity and demands increased, and then notice how they had to spend the last couple of months rewriting/refactoring/fixing the map editor alone so they could release it. Lot of work...

Hopefully they'll give a campaign editor this treatment too. There are some pretty damn awesome total conversion for Medieval 2 and Rome...

That is true. The only reason Medieval 2 is still installed in my computer is because of mods.

But hey, at least they release the tools. Better late than never.

Third Age Total War is flippin' great. Heck, it's good enough that if Creative Assembly were Paradox, the creator would have been hired already.  :P
