At least it doesn't require DLC.

And that's the best thing I can say about that.

I can't find the ability you're talking about.

It's in the avatar skill tree, right?

It's in the Fall of the Samurai avatar mode, not the Shogun 2 guy. Don't think the regular guy gets it.

I got matched against someone with 1000 wins and 20 losses. He also had the clairvoyance thing. It didn't end well for me.

Edit: Fuck this. The multiplayer just went absolutely shit. Ever since I broke level 7 the game keeps tossing me into stupid 14000 point matches where all people do is camp two corners of the map and shoot artillery at each other. You can't melee anything because there's goddamn elite units everywhere and every single unit is a bloody veteran. So you're forced to play extremely boring face offs where one artillery shoots another until one dies. Then whoever loses his artillery piece can surrender.

Such a stupid mode. I purposely choose to go into the ranked matchmaking explicitly because I want to fight 1v1s with limited resources. Not to play throw stones at each other for ONE HOUR each match...

I always thought artillery in multiplayer was poorly implemented. Artillery changed the face of warfare, but not that much.

First off, you have to throw an adviser in to do it. This isn't such a big deal, but it limits flexibility a lot and makes it annoying to put artillery in your army. (Ever had problems with the Kisho Ninja? Yeah. It sucks.)

Second off, they get a ton of ammo that can just tear any army without it apart. Just keep a bunch of Yari Ashigaru to defend its flanks, and your army between it and their army, and you've got a nearly invincible machine of deathiness.

Third, even with two identical armies, both sides just wait for the canons to whittle the other one down, like you mentioned.

Fourth, the range is so freaking long. They should be a heck of a lot less accurate at maximum range, rather than having a pretty good chance to arc that shot right into your fort and hit your general's bodyguard. It's usually not that bad, but it gets so much ammunition that the enemy just waits for the RNG to give the thumbs up.

I do think it's better in campaign matches, where artillery is rare, expensive, and hard to roll to a battlefield. In that case, artillery is more of a siege and defense weapon, not one you can bring into any old battle willy-nilly.

You'd say that, but playing as Hojo my entire army was using cannons, rocket launchers and mangonels. My main army would decimate an attacking army before they had the chance to run across the short distance. And if they used horses? I had matchlock samurai out in front.

I honestly kind of prefer having less, stronger units to going Zerg Rush in Fall of the Samurai.

Once you have so many guns in a line, it gets difficult to figure out where to put everything else.

Shogun 2 on the other hand..

At any rate, my brilliant strategy thus far has been asking umiman what to do and having him point out what a dumbass I'm being.

It's been working well so far. :P

I just remembered the conversation we had about 6 pages back about the ridiculousness of artillery fire from ships during land battles. Apart from the fact that, yes, those ships sure as hell can't shoot that far in naval battles, it's actually done quite well. In every situation where you can use ship based artillery, you can physically see the ships somewhere on the map.

Also, naval combat is boring and occasionally ridiculous. I have five ships, all the same class as the ONE ship I'm attacking and it still takes ten minutes and one or more of my ships rout during the fight. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, naval combat just can't be made fun I think. It's too ponderous by nature.

Given that it was even slower and more ponderous in real life... I really don't think there's anything more they can do about it. But then again, that's what I said about line infantry and Napoleonic style battles and look how much fun I'm having with Fall of the Samurai. So maybe CA just haven't found the right pinch of salt yet. :P

Kneel and fire is an instant win button in single player. It's pretty much constant fire, the only negatives are that the AI may or may not try to flank you with calvary.

I won with 2 groups of half dead line infantry and a cannon against 6 or 7 groups of line infantry and 3 generals after half of my army decided to defect to the other side.

I actually liked the naval battles in Empire Total War, but only if they involved a lot of ships.

Hey, didn't hear about the expansion until now. Is it harder? I tried Shogun 2 on the hardest setting my first time, and pretty much wiped the floor with everyone using one of the crappier daimyos. Almost every battle was a heroic victory, and I only ever used ~8 units maximum in a battle. Please tell me that they finally made battle AI that isn't pants-on-head retarded.
