First Fall of the Samurai Bout, despite turning off mixed avatars. Red Bear Infantry are scary, do not break when repeatedly charged by Yari Cavalry and Ashigaru are just the worst possible choice, seriously.

Never played Shogun before, apparently the Fall of the Samurai thing can be played on its own, without the base game.  Is it worth it?  Especially when compared to the vanilla game?

You should never use peasants against gunpowder units of any kind in the first place. :P It wouldn't have worked against a regular Shogun 2 force with matchlocks either.

All the Shogun 2 players that beat me use the same things. Katana cavalry. Freaking naginata warriors and monks of every kind. And bleeding light cavalry to steal every point from me uncontested because I can't field anything that can beat Shogun 2 cavalry.

Welp, got Fall of da samurai, been sucking at it.  Apparently, my samurai actually do break when surrounded by levied riflemen.

On NORMAL MODE.  All the tactics that I've learned using Rome Total War are not really useful here, I can't flank using samurai, or spearmen, or anything, without them getting shot.  So instead, I go for the charge, which gets them across in time. 

Unfortunately, I've been outnumbered a lot lately, almost all the enemy units levied gun-users.  In melee, against a katana unit, they're dead meat, but 10 or so of them, even in melee, do hurt. 

Any useful tactics against these gunpowder demons?  I'm a military tactics fanboy, this would be really useful.

Generally you'd want to use something expendable as a meatshield to draw enemy fire long enough for your melee troops to close enough distance.

Sounds interesting.  Any examples?  I don't see the Japanese equivalent for "peasant meatshield" in the game.

Yari Ashigaru. They're peasants and they come in large numbers, even more if you have Ikko Ikki (around 400 I think).

The enemy can't shoot if they're in combat. Charge peasants enmass from the front and use light cavalry to charge the rear or flank of the engaged squads (With some Samurai to help the ashigaru deal some casualties.). You don't need to engage the entire front line, if they have a long front line I would group my guys more heavily on one flank and force my way through and down their line.
You should aim for mass routs rather than destroy every squad they field. Killing the general is the best move to achieve that, but a wise player keeps their general out of combat unless victory is assured or he can tip the battle just enough to cause a rout.

Oh, also I might add that it can be useful to hide some units in a forest or keep a group apart from the rest. That way the enemy either has to engage this other group, either by turning to shoot them (exposing a flank in the process) or splitting their army (meaning you have less to deal with at once).

It's 200 units for the Ikko Ikki. I think. I'm on Ultra unit size and it is for me.

Anyway, multiplayer shenanigans. I was fielding a small size army (under 5000 and consisting of 2 Katana Samurai, two Yari Ashigaru, two Bow Samurai, a unit of Monk Cavalry and my General which is admittedly probably a bad setup - I am not good at this game) and the guy I went up against had 4 yari samurai, 4 bow samurai, 2 katana samurai and two yari cavalry. For those of you keeping score at home, that's more than 5000.

Bullshido. The game is clearly out to get me.

Maybe you just fell for the "rename units to different units" trick. Either that or you might have misread the game size when it was actually 10,000 size army.

No, they were definitely Samurai, they had the troop numbers. I think I musta gone like 50 points over the 5000 limit and ended up facing a 10000 point army.

That's not how it works.

When a low level player is involved, the game will always be 5000 points. When you get to a higher level and fight other higher levels, the game is always 10000 points. It's not based on what you preset.

Oh? I thought it was based on the size of the army you were bringing. Like, it changes from small to medium and beyond when you go over point limits. I thought that decided the size of the armies you could field.

This explains a lot, actually. So, I'm level 3, what would happen if I built a 10000 point army then?

You'd be able to use it if it were a medium game. When you get into the lobby you should check the gold indicator over your unit list. It'll tell you how much you have left / gone over by.

Hate to double post but uhhh.... I think I found the "Free win every game" skill for your general.

Down the strategy / middle skill tree, near the bottom is a skill that lets you see everything your enemies deploy, where they put them, what units they are, etc. etc. during the DEPLOYMENT PHASE. There's a retainer that does this, but that retainer gives a warning to the enemy saying he can see what you do. This one does not. So the enemy will still try to hide his cannons, position flanking cavalry, etc. Except I can see everything and move one step ahead to counter it.

I got it out of curiosity. Ever since I got it I haven't lost a single game because I'm basically omniscient. Not a single cannon has fired more than one shell because of surprise ninja buttsex. Not a single cavalry flank has succeeded because of bullshit psychic spear levy ambushes. I even fought a guy who tried to hide guerilla riflemen (which can also deploy anywhere) in what he thought would be my path... instead when I saw that, I literally plunked a ninja team right on that very squad so when the game started, I killed it in a few seconds.

Hell, even the fact that I know precisely where he starts and exactly what I'm up against just gives me such a ridiculous advantage it feels like goddamn easy mode.
