Erm. Shogun 2's on sale now on Steam, only £7.50.
Just a little update. You might like to know.

Two hours until fall of the samurai unlocks on steam! I can't wait to start the download that will take all day and then some! Hopefully it will just download the changes instead of downloading the entire game.

I've always wanted a modern day total war, and this is one step closer to it!

Impressions:
1. Heeeheeeeheeeeheeee.... this is VERY entertaining. It feels like a super powered version of Napoleon.... except the swords are still very viable and very scary. I laughed when the AI charged me with samurai.... I wasn't laughing when they reached me.
2. Battle numbers are pretty insane. Definitely the largest battles in any Total War game. It's retroactive with all Shogun 2 versions too, so even those without this expansion can still run 40,000 man battles.
3. Naval bombardment is all kinds of awesome. You get more / get better bombardments depending on the number and quality of ships you have nearby. The AI knows to avoid it too (you launch a flare at the location), so you can't just shoot it at some people marching somewhere. Also, it's absolutely hilarious using a giant ironclad to ram a tiny wooden paddleboat in half.
4. Manual control is pretty entertaining. I think it's more of a minigame than anything you actually need to do to win. It's there if you don't have anything to do for a bit in battle. Pretty sure the AI is better than me at aiming anyway. :P Sometimes it just feels really good to land a sweet ass cannonball on the enemy general's head.
5. The AI definitely got buffed. It's even more frightening than it was before... and honestly it was already pretty frightening. Hell, I'm still more afraid of the AI than I am of regular human players online (who are dumber and more cowardly than a pool of rectal fluid).

That's my impressions so far. I've done four of the historical missions (which have quite a lot of content to them now, it feels like an entire campaign) and only just started an actual campaign. So I haven't seen much.

Got this during the Midweek Madness sale, but don't have any of the expasions/DLC, so I'm getting stomped pretty hard in multiplayer (or at least, I was until I turned off Mix Avatars)... Yumi Ashigaru are surprisingly dangerous, though; I've found one group of them can actually beat one group of expansion musketeers mano-a-mano (but god help you if some arsebag decides to make his entire troop out of gunners).

Also, I've been trying to add the DFC as my clan, and it's letting me accumulate clan points/tokens, but the clan page still won't load properly (it still gives me the 'select a clan' menu, and gives some type of server error whenever I select one)

Aw what, $30 for the expansion when the original was just on sale for $7.50? I'll have to wait on this one.

Every time someone says that I want to punch something. It's $50 in Australia. This makes me immensely angry.

Welp, finally to the point of not being stomped by everyone, and got the clan thing working... now I just have to contend with the fact that I have to keep the graphics on minimum to not lag, and crashing occasionally even then.  :(

Single player campaign my group 6 gunners 4 cannons and 2 general units and offshore artillery, them 2 horsemen and 7 yari groups.

The offshore guns cut 3 of their yari groups in half and constant cannon bombardment on the horsemen cut them in half too. The first group of horses charged through one of my gunner groups but then ran. The yari groups got to halfway through my units range before running.

Total casualties 27 enemy causalties 756 8).

Why do the naval battles start so far apart they take forever because of it.

I might get Fall of the Samurai, but I'm not sure whether it's multiplayer is compatible with the regular Shogun 2 or not? I like the multiplayer aspects of Total War and I'll probably buy the regular Shogun 2 if I ever really decide to get into the campaign components.

Do you guys have any idea if the expansion's multiplayer is backwards-compatable?

Also, would I be missing out on anything aside from the campaign and DLCs of the original game?

It mixes and matches. You can play Shogun 2 base in multiplayer and be paired with someone playing an army based from FotS or RotS.

I believe the tick box "Mixed Avatars" decides whether you play against someone using a different expansion army. Though on second thoughts that might just affect the general unit.

Edit: I'll add a little more. Buying the DLC unlocks the new units to use in your armies in multiplayer. I don't think there's anything stopping you from having a mishmash of units from across all the DLC other then how effective it would be in combat. The DLC also adds the new feature of being able to create multiple avatars, two base and two FotS (Not sure about RotS, those generals can have bows but I haven't checked) which you can switch between.

I do know you can fight against expansion units, I've played one battle multiplayer (First ever!) and it was my base army vs an army made up of matchlocks, levy spearmen and cavalry (Cavalry from the new expansion, matchlocks... maybe) Just won due to me flanking with my general and managing to kill his general before my army mass routed.

Does Australia not get Steam, or are games on Steam still subject to Australia's insane markup?
