You know... that's how it happened in real life...

Generals stopped suicide charging shit ever since gunpowder was invented. Heck, none of of the Mongols ever had their generals anywhere near the front lines and back then the worst they had to fear were arrows and fireworks. I wouldn't have expected Napoleon to charge an infantry line head on (would have been pretty funny if he did), so there's no reason to be disappointed that you can't do it. =| It's just how it is.

So yeah, I also agree that generals as battlefield units should be moved off map with the more modern games. Maybe with little couriers running around the battlefield... or flag bearers hehehe.

Edit: Oh, I was wondering where Obama clan was located when I found out that one of the Ikko Ikki castles in the game is called Obama castle. I think it's the one right above Kyoto.

yup. Caesar charging into barbarians was such a notable event that historians boosted about him for millenia (and counting).

I didn't realize they had gunpowder back in Roman days. Goddamn those were some advanced barbarians.

- During a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.

Whaaaaaat?  Does the army call in the barrage coordinates to the navy with their coconut radios?  Are all the battles conveniently on the beach now?

The only naval bombardment in support of land troops during that period was when taking naval ports and forts, usually heavily coordinated well in advance (and all too often failing miserably due to timing or weather).  I don't think inland fire is even possible until the 1900's when you've got radio and guns heavy enough to throw that far, and even then we're not talking more than ~10 miles inland - Fukushima is a good 30 miles inland yet is within a 'coastal province'.

Dude, I can order a unit on the far side of a map to follow exact orders while there is a hill in the way of him and his general. I think realism is erring on the side of fun here :P

True!  But fine control is a fantasy we blindly accept (and expect) in nearly all of our wargames though.  That right there is a historic mechanic that arguably never even existed (at that range) until cruise missiles!

If they wanted fun, they should've added dirigibles.   :P

I think it's more that, contrary to what Total War might have you believe, only the ballsiest, arguably stupidest generals risked their lives charging the enemy, even two thousand years ago. Don't quote me on that, but it's what I'd assume.

Firstly, I would think that they'd do it via hot air balloon and semaphore. Secondly, range is a little bit harder to excuse but that's less of a glaring inaccuracy so I think I'll let it slide in the name of fun.

The alternative is watching your units blindly blunder into terribly situations while you can do nothing about it. I mean if we're going realistic here, it would sometimes be weeks before you even heard the results of a battle much less be able to command one in real time, and you could lose outlying provinces before you even knew you were at war if your enemy is a knave.

I can just see miles of samurai, sitting in trees with war fans, semaphore-relaying "Adjust Fire!" out to sea...   :D

Haha, its a game, I get it, I'm certainly no realism fanatic.  There's minor kinds of historical inaccuracies everywhere, like full units of onna-bushi or ninja, but its more fun to have them in than not.  At least they're based on some sort of historical fact, and you can even treat them in an abstract manner.  Part of the appeal of the series is to throw you back into whatever era it is that they're making Total War out of and you expect the units and features to support that.  Naval bombardment in support of in-land combat just feels like silly overkill - don't the poor samurai already have it bad enough against 'modern' weaponry, without weapons from the future?  Let's just throw in the USS Akron and airborne-samurai from rappel lines while we're at it.  At least the dirigibles are a realistic replacement for the samurai-in-trees as a forward observer. ;D

Back then, naval bombardment meant pounding the crap out of seaside forts before they could pound you back, or sailing into harbors and using the threat of bombardment to take entire port cities hostage (Commodore Perry and the Black Ships).  So the new port siege mechanics are a nice addition for that period.

And, in the true styling fashion, this thread is revived within hours of me making a thread about the new DLC.

Fucking. Figures.

Hehe, Werdna, the argument you are looking for is not "it's too realistic", it is "it's stretching my disbelief too far" ;)
