I saw the new patch and thought to try multiplayer.

Clicked automatch land battles.

BOOM

Umiman level 1 vs level 6 and a level 7.

Yup, automatch put me in a 1v2.

And guess what?

I WON!!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Edit: So after 10 or so games I found out that matchmaking is kinda balanced. There is an advantage in being a low level player. You literally get shittonnes of units.

The average level 10 general's army: 700 men
My army: TWO THOUSAND MEN

GG. I hope your veteran Katana hero can survive more than 10 to 1 odds.

In fact, my numbers advantage is so freaking crazy that I've literally fought 1v3 and 1v4 no problem and won. Seriously. All my freaking allies would start the game by hiding in the corner of the map like freaking cowards and pretend they're playing sim city with their troops. I'm the only bugger who actually ventures out anywhere. I take my huge blob of men (which actually outnumbers FOUR ENTIRE ARMIES fielded by level 10 players) and rape everything. When my allies realize I'm going to win the entire thing without their help they start rushing in hoping to get some semblance of glory. Screw them. I end the match with 3000 kills. They get 12.

Another thing I do completely different from the other cowards in this game is that I level my general completely in the combat tree. He's a freaking tank of doom. None of that strategy nonsense. I expect him to get at least 200 kills per match and he does it with no problem. All my enemies so far have been leveling up strategy trees instead. Good for them. I hope those tiny aura bonuses (combined with tiny army) help them when my super general reaches his weakling general.

So, the automatch is smarter than it looks, eh?

(Incidentally... I wonder how your two opponents felt, getting their arses kicked 2v1 against a first-time MP player?  ;D )

I recall them saying:

"Wow, we suck"

In all chat. I think it was mostly because I outnumbered both of them combined. And my entire army was katana.

After my experiences today, I highly recommend people who haven't tried multiplayer yet to do so. Don't be afraid even if you're level 1. You outnumber them and you'll probably have larger balls than them. Almost everyone is a bleeding coward. Charge with everything you have and crush their spirits. Make them rue the day they messed with true blue dwarves.

Edit: I thought I'd show you guys what I mean when I say people are cowards:

They took the suggestion to hold back a portion of your army to its logical extreme.

That has happened to me quite a few times actually. One 2v2 battle I played, my army engaged 1 of the enemies while my ally and the other enemy just sat there and stared at each other just out of archer range. Then after I defeated the army I was fighting against I moved my few remaining troops into position to assist my ally against the remaining enemy and he just surrendered before I was even halfway into position. It's like they had previously agreed to wait for the outcome of my little skirmish and that would determine the winner, it was kind of lame actually.

This game could honestly give out hand jobs for free and people would still bitch.

Yup. It's truly bizarre. So cowardly.

Weirdness.  I could just about run this on low settings.  Since the update I turned it up to medium (using dx10 though) and if anything it runs smoother than low used to.

Here's a battle report. This is me at level 2 in a ranked 1v1 match vs a level 10. Money limit is 5000 koku. The battle lasted 8 minutes.

I skimmed the last few pages of the thread so I might have missed the talk about this, but I haven't played Shogun in a while and having picked it up again I gotta say, whatever a recent update did the game runs incredibly smoothly now. Far smoother than Empire ever did.

e: And... now it runs rather poorly again. But last night, when it was in normal full screen mode it ran fine and this morning, when it was in windowed mode, it ran really fast. What the hell?

99% sure that's an issue with your pc then.

Yeah, probably, but I don't know what caused my game to run so beautifully smoothly and now I'm worried I never will again.

All I can really suggest is double checking your graphical settings ingame and trying it on both fullscreen and windowed.  Failing that, maybe a defrag in in order?

Yeah, trying now.

Anyway, Empire got me back into Total War and then I got back into this and man, what was I doing when I wasn't playing this? Not having fun, that's what.

Ninjedit: everything appears to be set to Ultra... I think perhaps the settings reset. I will solve you, Shogun!

I will solve you.

I love the Chosokabe clan so much, the fact that you get wads of cash from farming and superior bowman is just amazing, plus there on an island! They feel so very British.
