I love naval battles in shogun, much better than any other total war. Personally I'd go with a Bow Kobaya zerg force, based on using fire arrows to ignite enemy ships systematically.
At the same time, the diplomacy AI is definitely better, with allies actually functioning as allies, sometimes even not betraying you whenever you call for their help.

I find that autoresolve AI barely takes walls into consideration. Taking cities with autoresolve is MUCH easier than in real battles. Mostly because I had many cavalry units, and they can't do shit against high walls with archers while in autoresolve they TOTALLY destroy archers.

By the same token don't autoresolve siege defence either as that also does not appear to count walls and you'll suffer because of it.

Ships getting stuck by just being near other ships, ships not boarding and just hanging out for a few minutes before i tell them to do something else, Ships navigating like a babys first steps due to pathfinding AI.
If I tell my ships to board another ship on collision course I expect them to do so, not just throw the single hook and slowly drive past, turn a bit and then just stay there getting shot at.

I'll second this.  All my naval battles end up something like the naval version of a 6 year old's soccer game.

I would love to play this game but the graphical issues are keeping me from doing so. Can't really set my settings to anything aside from "low" and I can't find the "preference.txt" file to reset the automated settings detection.

Under windows 7 it is in '<drive:>\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scripts', for XP it will probably be 'Documents and Settings' instead of 'Users'

My god the date are by far the most powerful mid game clan.  Seriosuly, I've never played a battle before them that ran 2000vs1500 and won with only 100 losses and the enemy remaning at 125 men.......

Well... What did you fight against? I never played Date but it sounds like the main strategy is "CHAAAAARGE, oh see they run"

It was a combination army, I was fighting the chosokabe, and they had a ton of archers, I really didn't think my  men would close the gap before being shredded.  Apparently a charge bonus also makes you faster?

Nah, Unlike the past TW I feel that archers gets to shoot very little before the army is in melee. Archers usually ends up shooting at other archers after shooting two or three volleys.
You might have more trouble versus the katana clan or a heavy cavalry army, but that kinda depends on the units modifiers.

I usually put my archers behind the melee infantry when the battle is joined and have them continue firing into the enemies over my own infantry. Especially when my own infantry is ashigaru. In general, the faster routing of the enemy outweighs the losses from friendly fire.

I'm just too used to pikewall + archer tactics from older games that I habitually do this now too. Admittedly, I have no idea if guard & spearwall formation help against anything but cavalry, but my guts tells me so.
Just a few turns ago i got hold of my first forge, and started thinking about the encampment, another +2 attack or +2 defence? It feels like +6 melee total would be an awesome bonus.

Does anyone else go for the literature provinces as fast as they can? I'm the kind of guy that wants to research everything so it seems a must for me =D

I'm the turn the map red guy myself, I rarely go into marine combat, and always spread outwards from my home province.  Though I do tend to make a general or two full study tree, to help with the gain of tech.
