I have all the opposite problems of you guys. I got a realm divide on turn 40-ish(I was always at war)., and all the cities are underdeveloped. Now the AI is spawning stacks(or whatever it does) and is sweeping through the lv 1 fortresses I have.  ::)

Oh, and due to this undevelopness my armies are still only ashiguru, and the Shogun has lots of samurai.  :-\

Yeah, I have that problem now. I have no money because all my trade agreements got broken, all my soldiers are dead and i'm pretty sure i'm screwed.

Fucking realm divide sucks.

I recommend instead of relying on allies for trade, instead saturate as many of the foreign trade posts with trade ships as possible. Each of them give nearly 2000 koku... each, when fully saturated. The AI doesn't even bother to take some of them.

Yeah, i'm doing it this time. I'll put about two nanban trade ships on each one for defense (because they count as trade too I think!) And i'll shove a load of markets around.

What do you guys think of going christain?  i usualy stay buddist just for the powerful mink based warriors, but are the early gun units really worth having almost every other clan become unfreindly with you?

Heh. Mink warriors is a fun image.
Check earlier in this thread, I believe it's already been discussed and had the strengths and weaknesses summarized

Don't go christian. Have you daimyo take the leftmost route on his level up table, he'll add buddist zeal to every province (I think) and build the top level buddist building (whatever it was called) in the town you have a nanban port in, and a monk.

You get guns, decent warriors and ships from said town, and everyone is happy.

TWO?
Good gods man, one of those things can tear through anything, and they cost 250 in upkeep- unless your enemies are deploying top-tier (drydock) navies, or have nanban ships of their own, that is total overkill.

Nope. Thats what I thought, but it only applies to the province containing the general in question.

Choosing Christian vs Buddhist is not a clear-cut choice. Christianity is the more 'extreme' religion- bigger bonuses, bigger penalties.
For maximum fun, go Ikko. I'm sure there'll be a mod for that by now.

Would sure be fun to play Ikko Ikkis in the grand campaign. Raaaa power to the masses, death to the samurai! They'd likely need a roster of their own though, since getting samurai would be weird. I don't know if getting just ashigaru and monks would be enough.

I'm supprised there isn't a mod for Shintoism. It held a huge part in Japanese culture for a LONG time.

...Buddhism is (in the game) shorthand for Shinto-Buddhism.

>.> That's kinda odd since they are rather different belief systems, though both where practiced heavily in Japan. But whatever, that makes more sense than completeing excludeing it.

They can also stay indefinitely at negative food.

Ooohhh no they can't.  A great and quite fun strategy is to use your ninjas to sabotage their farms so they go into negative food, and watch as their provinces erupt into chaos.

Personally I feel that they did a poor job with Christianity and what it involves as it feels out of place. It suits Medieval TW with religious wars like the crusades and aggressive conversions.
But converting most of japan in 50 years?

Conversion rates has always been absurd in Total War games. Like converting Palestine catholic in ten years, when the Crusader States always had overwhelmingly muslim population throughout their history. I guess you can just tell yourself it doesn't portray beliefs of the population, but rather the local elite. Like the hundred most influential local families or something. Silly either way.
