Yeah, attacking castles without defending archers is cake. It seems the AI values the castle far too much for it to even consider sallying forth to kill the guys attacking them. The AI behaves a bit oddly with archers in castles as well, I had a siege yesterday against a castle with two samurai archers. The AI deployed them on the walls, but when I moved my own archers to fire at them from the side, they just stood there and was slowly mowed down by arrow rain.

I've found with the tiered castles the AI will usually wait on one side completely. This means you can literally just run to the other side and climb up.

Silly AI

What? He's firing from the hip.

This is true, they have trouble diverting units to take out the one capturing their keep if you've already engaged most of them in other areas.

I've been playing quite a lot lately as the archer guys (chokoroku ???), and the problem is, i've become the shogun, have a lot of provinces and ok relations with people, and suddenly everybody declares me war, even my allies and vassals, whats the big idea?

That there would be the infamous 'realm divide', which triggers when you're sufficiently big.

Basically, most TW games became a bit of a snooze by the late game - once you own half the map, finishing off the rest of the map was fairly boring. Realm divide keeps the late game interesting, making it harder to steamroll the remaining provinces piecemeal.  ;D

(Apparently, there's a mod that reduces the effects of realm divide - it was posted a page or two back, IIRC. Won't be much use to you in this game, though...  :-\ )

No. He already triggered the realm divide event if he's already Shogun.

Think about it this way. Every single clan wants to be Shogun.

You are now Shogun.

Yeah, but nobody declares war on the default shogun, who is the weakest OPM i've ever seen!

If that's an end-game spicing up, well it's nowhere near end game to me, still got a lot to conquer, i've got like 16 provinces only, i can't fight off whole japan like this!

Ah; I missed that part. "Everyone declared war on me!" usually means realm divide, so I jumped to conclusions. Sorry!  :-[

Because then they would be Shogun and everyone else would declare war on them.

So I've downloaded and played the Steam demo's extended tutorial campaign but ran into a bit of a problem. At the point were I was instructed to load my armies onto boats and go lay siege to a castle on the mainland things abruptly went south. After carefully explaining the defender's ability to choose to block the siege navally or endure a land siege the enemy made no move to block my carrier ships (thereby skipping what I assume was the naval combat tutorial) and instead immediately rode out to break the siege with a massive force roughly three times the size of my own. Since the demo forces automatic resolution on non-tutorial battles, my army was utterly curbstomped and I lost all adult members of the royal family. Mr. Advisor Person was curiously silent regarding this matter and I have begun to fear that he was an enemy infiltrator the whole time.

I don't remember there being a naval battle in the tutorial - at least, I didn't encounter one. I kinda got lucky - there was a full stack of units defending the target province, so I backed off to recruit more men, and in an attempt to gain some allies, struck a trade deal with the (Christian) clan to the north, in the (probably vain) hope that they'd help me double-team the target if I could befriend them. My enemy responded by attacking said 'future ally' to the north in what I can only assume was a freakish coincidence, leaving their capital practically unguarded. I laid siege to their fort, forgetting that their army was only one turn away and could easily march back to break the siege... except they didn't, instead heading further north. Next turn, I attack, tear them apart, tutorial ends.

Given that I was expecting to have to befriend a few allies, pile 20 units into a stack, and pray to the autoresolve gods, this was kind of an anticlimactic conclusion.  :P

As to your problem... yuck. You could reload an earlier save, if you don't mind savescumming and actually have an earlier save. Or you could rebuild your army, ally with nearby clans to provide additional firepower, and prepare for a massive, epic showdown to decide the fate of this tiny portion of Japan!

There is no naval battle in the demo, and the actual 3 battles it lets you play use different units to the ones you produce.  It's a taster, not a freebie :)

Posting here since I love this game.  though I gotta say, sogo are insanely overpowered.  It's like siege untis didn't rip it up enough, they get ones from missions and their siege units have insanely good stats.  I actually won a seige versus 10 units once with a singe fire catapult and 2 sword samariu.

Wait... siege units are actually good? I've been avoiding them ever since the tutorial... you know, the one where a fire catapult gets to empty its entire ammo supply onto a single stationary archer unit and kills maybe a third of them?

...maybe I should get around to building a siege engine, then.  :o

Aha, yeah, they're okish. They could be better. I like using them in multiplayer because if you set it up behind the woods the other dude will usually charge his avatar at them. Through the woods. Where my spear wall is hidden.

Also, NANBAN TRADE SHIPS ROCK. This thing has single handedly captured me a fleet, i'm going for the black ship next.
