What clans are on the farthest ends of the map? I like to start on one end and work my way down, leaves less room for being flanked by large enemy armies.

Your generals unit is bloody good in close combat.

Yes, but if the general dies you get a pretty massive moral hit so it's a risk

Yeah, the whole shattered thing is an issue. However, i'm talking about dismounted and supported by spears. My bodyguard didn't lose a single guy. I was really quite impressed.

Shimazu to the west and Date to the east.

Shimazu/Date, but be careful as the AI can and does send large Naval Invasions.

To expand, they're both sword-clans; Shimazu in the west get katana bonuses and the other one gets +twohanded swords that I can't remember the name off off my head. I guess you could say Chokosabe a third corner as well, being pretty isolated if you build a navy to defend it.

No-Daichi?  Also, thanks for the warnings about navies. But I would rather worry about a navy than worry about an 'ally' on the opposite side of my land than my main war focus suddenly attacking me.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I was thinking it could have been "no-dachi" but I didn't see any gain from guessing. ;)

No-Dachi, yeah, which my campaigning army has about three units of. Play to your strengths my ass, I'll just be dumb, it's served me well so far.

And yeah, the Date get all the honorable chicks, go Date. Just make sure you have the navy to back it up, because it's that or paying for a bigass garrison in every single ass-backward village along the coast and having to deal with a sudden dangerous enemy presence without the resources to move men there should they come by boat, which they will.

...along the coast and having to deal with a sudden dangerous enemy presence...

Thats something I don't really like with TW. No matter how small, even a canoe can freight an army of 10.000.
Haven't tried them yet, but the no-dachi units is no good?

I wouldn't say there is a single unit that is no good.  The whole rock/paper/scissors thing means that every unit has its advantages.

You really have to be aggressive with them. They can't last long in prolonged melees but they destroy anything they can charge at, especially with the banzai ability activated.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

2 mistakes on my part that cost me my empire, which I will learn from
1. I had sent a invasion force to Settu without gathering intelligence, and was met by a force twice as strong as mine. My army didn't stand a chance-As I group all my strike forces into one unit, that meant that when they(and they did) send a naval invasion force to Shikoku, I was powerless to stop them.
2. I had all but the center of Kyushu captured. I made the same mistake I did in 1, and as I was frantically trying to build up my forces they sent their main army out to capture and conquer. I was done for.

God damn, i'm getting my ass handed to me both by the AI and by other people.

Medieval 2 tactics really don't work. I also have "dishonorable coward" as an avatar trait, for some reason. Its slightly annoying. Possibly because i've conceded defeat twice, but they'd still get the win so I don't see why that'd show up.

Also, my last battle had my Avatar run around a unit of spearmen shooting arrows at them. The guy was screaming at me to hurry up and run into his spears. Silly people, don't they know that i'm horrible and will take any win I can get?

Damn, the samurai retainers are an amazing thing when defending with only ashigaru against a proper army.

I managed to win defending a level 1 castle town against an army with mostly samurai archers, some katana samurai and three generals with only two yari ashigaru, two bow ashigaru and the aforementioned samurai retainers. I think the decision by the computer to stand and fire arrows at my bow ashigaru at the wall for most of the battle had something to do with it. One single bow ashigaru unit killed 2˝ samurai archer units. When the three generals decided to dismount their horses and storm the walls, the samurai retainers were basically the only unit that didn't waver, and I guess I got lucky that some of my other ashigaru units decided to fight to the death.

That battle was so crucial, it crushed one of the enemy clan's two large armies, and three seasons later their whole clan was wiped out, leaving only one clan between me and control of Kyushu.

Aye, they're a thing of beauty.

After fighting about 5 siege battles, i've found that if a defending unit is inside the walls, it will fight to the death.

I also love garrison units. Just sayin'
