I'm not playing much on this 1GHz PIII 256MB RAM Compaq Evo laptop, which is probably ~10 years old.

Bah, I wish I could. But I've got only a copy of XP to play with. It boots up in roughly 10 minutes, and in general requires a lot of patience.

Sounds like you didn't have much of a choice in passing on this, even if you could fit it.

Curious: How are the sea battles? Are they more funz than Empire? Is it less clunky? Ect?

Much smoother and there are islands and things you have to add some strategy, but still pretty slow compared to land battles imo.

Gonna have to try to get a refund for this. Even on the lowest settings, Shogun 2 consistently overheats my graphics card. I've took the side off and kept the window wide open to try and get freezing cold air in, but it just seems to hate my PC.

Which vid card do you have? And what settings do you use with it. I have brand-new-ish nVidia gtx 460 sonic 2GB and been thinking about getting the STW2 once the price falls a little.

There are two main things I would like to know about, if you don't mind answering: First, how is the diplomatic part doing? Have they bothered to write decent AI in that part this time? Secondly, are there any campaign map "events" implemented, stuff like disease/plague, storms, natural disasters and such? One of my main objections to Empire was how incredibly stripped that part was in comparison to earlier games, you see.

Edit: And by diplomacy, I don't just mean player-initiated ones, but also things like whether the infamous backstabbingness of allies is still there, or if they've actually made an effort to make it make sense. These two things are basically what's keeping me from buying the game right now, as the rest of the game seems improved. Right?

I haven't seen enough of the AI diplomacy to pass final judgment on it, although it seems better.
Yeah, there are natural disasters.

They're... certainly different. There's only, what, two ships that use the European 'broadside' technique; most ships have a 360 degree firing arc, which makes sense given that the 'guns' are a bunch of archers on the top deck. There's a lot of different ships, with different tactics - mostly centred on either firing arrows and dodging boarding attempts, or on eating arrows and boarding the enemies for honourable, hand-to-hand combat. Then you've got your fast sail-ship for chasing down and boarding those small, agile enemies, the specialty siege-tower bow-ship for harassing enemy bow ships, the bomb-ship for people who like living on the ragged edge of disaster being boarded, the converted European trade ship for people with money to burn and no fear of the southern barbarians...

I'm not entirely certain whether I like them or not. The tutorial battle was pretty darn one-sided (you get two cannon ships and an incredibly over-powered flagship.  ??? ), and I've yet to engage in a naval battle in the campaign. Ships feel pretty big and clunky, to be honest, which is doubly true when the primary goal of large ships is to get in close and board small (and maneuverable!) ships, but that might've just been the sheer numbers packed into a pretty small area in the tutorial.

In one of the developer videos where they are talking about naval battles, the CA team was talking about how hard it is to implement realistic naval battles because all the negative emotions that the players feel during one are quite synonymous with how they really are in real life. I can kinda understand that actually.

Sea battles are a bit difficult to get into. You have to practice a lot to get a good feel for it.

Land battles are amazing though. I've been really getting into the multiplayer bits, just because of how fun it can be, and I'm on a bit of a winning streak. For some reason, this isn't reflected in the stats because they're not all necessarily ranked matches apparently.

Well it all sounds good but is it enouth to make up for the fact (I assume) it's much harder to mod?
