SEGA and The Creative Assembly are proud to let gamers everywhere know that a demo for Total War: Shogun 2 will soon be available on Steam. The demo will allow all armchair samurai to test their skills in epic land battles and on Total War: Shogun 2’s gorgeous new campaign map.
From their blog. So yeah, it seems it's not only battles for once. I still haven't downloaded it completely, so I have yet to see if it's true, though.

It's a limited single player campaign. It's also something like 8gb of download just to warn people.

Still ridiculous.  How big is the full game going to be?!

Probably not much bigger actually.  If this has the full campaign map and a good selection of units there's probably not going to be a huge amount of stuff left over, considering the freeform gameplay of Total War.

I played the demo, its awesome. Very much gives me the old feeling the original game did while offering up some stylish additions. Will buy.

I enjoyed the Demo. I was a little sad that they didn't include any kind of naval engagement in the demo, nor were there field battles outside of pre-organized tutorial fights, even after it compels you to work beyond the Tutorial's handholding.

I'm also glad they do have a degree of variety for the various clans, seemingly. You play as the Chosokabe clan in the tutorial campaign, and they are given a selection of archer samurai which are allegedly superior to other clans.

If this applies across the faction list, then I'll be very pleased, as opposed to Empire: Total War, with it's barely different factions.

Diplomacy looks interesting, the Tech-tree looks interesting, and clan management and general trait/retainer management has a lot of interesting looking RPG elements that I love.

Hows the performance for everyone?

I've pretty much left things as they were suggested, medium-ish (i think i added vsync), and my impression was "smoother" overall than Empire TW at low settings.
That game really hated my PC.

Still waiting for qualified reviewers to get their hands on the full game before i make a move.

AI still dumber than bricks. I just saw a group of bow samurai standing in the firey crater of a siege weapon as if nothing happened. Bleh.

I really enjoyed the demo. Performance was good, but it's really hard to tell what is what. There's some lag in commands too. I seriously had no clue what was going on in that siege battle tutorial. I just asked everyone to charge in and hoped for the best.

But the feel and character of the game man, it's so awesome. The voices are great. The ninja cinematics are really funny (I swear my ninja are dumber than a pile of dirt). There's a lot of good vibes coming from this game. Just conquering that island felt like an achievement.

Also, beating that historical battle on hard felt very awesome too. Goddamned traitors! I'm going to revise history as I see fit!
