Yeah, fuck realism. Hungary in medieval 2 had battlefield assassins, and even though there is no way they would work, who the fuck cares.

Musliem sides had their own battlefield assassins too, fun to play with, and I always got access to them since I'm an assassin whore, I assassinate everyone I can, diplomats, spies, assassins, princesses, diplomats, captains, generals, etc.

Europa Barbarorum proved that you don't need to have pretend units to have a fun game.

If your just gonna say fuck realism; why don't you just give your knights AK-47s and be done with it?

Yeah, I agree. A total war game in modern times would be nice... though I have no idea how it would work.

Very small unit groups, larger area of movement if an army gets into a plane, but those can only go to airports/runways in cities or drop units via-parachute, which makes them lose some units. Nukes at highest city level but those are very costly and make every nation at war with you and loath you as much as possible.

If you do anything untoward to another country, you get raped by a nearby great power unless you suck up to that great power or are a great power yourself, in which case you have a blank cheque to do whatever you like. :p

I could see a WW1 Total War game being pretty interesting while also being conceivable, since it was still basically two lines attacking each other.

I have mixed feelings about special units as I'd like to see a historically accurate Japan. That's not to say I won't enjoy sending geisha assassins to take out my enemies.

On the topic of a modern or future TW game I worry that having mostly ranged units would be dull. A future setting where technology forces mostly hand to hand combat would work; think Arrakis: Total War.

Edit: The whole setting of the Dune novels would lend themselves quite well now that I think about it.

Edit: Thinking about it again the war of assassins might not be so suitable for a TW game.

You could just make it so every unit is 'knife guy' or 'double shotgun guy' from the modern CoD games. Also, ranged units can be fun even if they are the only units.
As to made up units, yeah it can be a bit annoying to history buffs(or amature history buffs like myself), but its also fun or cool or in some rare cases has a tiny itty-bitty basis in reality and allows for something cool that isn't completely realistic. Like the Britanian Head Hurlers from RTW. Yes a few britianians here or there did throw heads coverned in lime at enemies, but those where heads of their personal enemies that they cut off themselves, their own trophies. But the unit in-game is more fun and if they did it more realisticly it would feel like another varient of the roman legionary units throwing two javilians before meleeing.
