I wish I could watch it, but my country blocks it "due to copyright issues" or so it says

I love how he used inferior troops in the second movie making it look like the AI is a great tactician...

Come on, it was more just an excuse to show the wall scaling and multi directional AI attacks than a true battle demo.

I don't find anything particularly sinister in that.

alright, I watched the battle report 2 with the CA idiots. Seriously, this dude can not play total war at all.

But, siege work looks similar to the other games in that block troop formations are lost for the most part and it turns into a cluster fuck. However, seems like there is more room to fight and rotate in than past titles. which is a good thing.

This is true of pretty much the whole CA staff btw (not being any good at the game I mean) :)

Explains the way the game works. :p

Just like real combat, to be honest.

Lastly, keeping fingers crossed aginst ridiculous units like the burning pigs in Rome and the assassins from MTW2.
While I agree with the rest of your post I must point out Romans DID infact cover pigs in tar, light them on fire, and hope they ran towards elephants to scare the hell out of them. It's why elephant warfare became so rare, elephants where hard to get to europe and pigs could be raised enmass. Arcani are more ridiculous.

Well, it was actually a useless tactic that was used in maybe one or two battles judging from contemporary (usually lying) sources. The reason elephant warfare was so rare was because they're fairly hard to train, often trample your own troops and they're near impossible to get across seas on boats. Nevermind the fact the only real usage they have is causing fear in your enemies.

But, yeah, the arcani probably are more ridiculous in a way. The concept was there, though, in the form of Persia's Immortals / Japanese samurai masks.

There was a group clandestine group working for the Romans called the Arcani historically. Although nothing indicates that they were warriors, let alone awesome battle ninjas who can hide in plain sight.

Arcani did exist, but they where the equivilent to the spys and assassins you recruit in RTW, not battlefield assassins who hide in plain sight and scare the bejesus out of people. But I'm getting off topic here and I appologise for that.
Edit:-ouch, arcanied
On Topic, I'm looking forward to Shogun 2 but as with all games I'm sure it won't be even close to as good as they hype. It may or may not be better than M2TW or RTW, the only games I have of the TW series, but it won't be as good as they say. But as I said in the closed thread, heres hopeing in this one our cavilry can actuilly get off their fucking horses and act like infantry if nessicery, like in seiges.

Man, you haven't heard about Alexander the Great or what? The elephants were all the rage in India. The farther east you went, the more common they were.
Heck, the importance of elephants in warfare even shows in that onld Persian game - chess(a.k.a.the four pillars of warfare: infantry=pawns, cavalry=knight, elephants=bishop, rook=chariots).

Of course, TW:Rome never concerned itself with far east, so the point is only mildly relevant.
Still, always nice to show off, eh?

Yes, but they did not have a whole unit of burning pigs..

secondly, in addition to what Farseer said: elephant units did not dominate the battlefield for long because they were expensive, hard to transport, hard to feed and take care of, got torn apart by javelins, and are smarter than horses, which made them harder to trick into charging face first into a bunch of men with pointy sticks

oh and yes, in India, which is reflected very well in the RTW mod Total Realism, elephants had the home team advantage, but it was not easy to get those suckers out of there all the way out to Europe, hence we are talking African elephants, because that is what Carthage had.

Sure, I was talking about Europe, though. :p Elephants are far too expensive to feed if they're not really being used.

I was talking about the concept of "elite troops who use fear as a major tactic".

I wonder if we're going to have awesome battle ninjas in Shogun 2.

I can't remember the exact phrase, but in one of the early videos they talked about how Shogun 2 was going to use some of the Japanese mystique, I'd say yes. I got the feeling we'd see battle ninjas and warrior monks and kensai make a comeback. Not because they're realistic, but because they're cool and fun.
