Does Australia not get Steam, or are games on Steam still subject to Australia's insane markup?

I'd bet it's the same as the European steam store, everything's just more expensive. I know they just convert everything into euros directly, i.e. a $29.99 game costs €29.99 in the European steam store, which is almost a 33% markup. Australia's worse, though, it seems. :-\

Actually, if they only converted everything into ASD directly (which they do) we'd only be paying a dollar or so more. It's just that Australian games are all subject to a ridiculous markup in prices. New releases can go for $120, and things like Developer Packs and other special deals can reach up to $200+. It's absolutely mad. Steam actually sells things far cheaper than retailers do, but it's still a huge leap more than other countries. Extra Credits did an episode on it and, if I remember correctly, couldn't come up with any good reason for why it happens. It's baffling.

I don't think it's an exchange rate issue more of a trade policy issue (IIRC Australia treats games the same way it treats alcohol and cigarettes, so you have "sin tax" to persuade people not to do it). But yeah, that's pretty harsh.

On Steam everything I buy is in USD, so with the current exchange rate I can buy a game $100 USD (Say, Batman: Arkham City. That's the price of it right now) and after exchanging it to AUD, which means it's around $95 AUD, I can save $5.

If we go to Extra Credits, from what I remember they said that the higher prices here might have something to do with an economic slump sometime in the 70s or 80s, and the prices have just never gone down, despite our improved economy. Though that was all before my time so ¯\(°_o)/¯

I buy all my games on Steam now because it's far cheaper than going to a physical store, also steams insane sales means I can wait a year and get, say again Batman: Arkham Asylum, for $30 when it goes 60% off.

Fall of the Samurai is great.

Being able to field 40 unit spaces is awesome too.

Hahahaha, the irony of my multiplayer experience is quite funny.

I started out my army as the normal FotS style riflemen with a few spears. But mostly riflemen. After 10 games now, I switched completely to katana units... no riflemen at all... and a few matchlocks. So much for the superiority of guns! I even tossed out the pistols on my general and gave him better swords. It's not because rifles suck. I just like charging things and I'm pretty good at making sure my units can reach the enemy. And remember! When samurai manage to reach your rifles... you are absolutely screwed.

--------------

I also keep getting matchmade against max level opponents as always. There was even this douchebag one that asked me to leave the game in the lobby so he wouldn't have to "waste his time killing me".

His entire army was super veteran monk horse archers, his super veteran bow general, and one unit of naginata samurai. Mine was the above. I took such insane losses trying to reach him. BUT I REACHED HIM! And as we all know... heh heh heh... when samurai reach your... err... horse archers, you are absolutely screwed!

"gg got completely outplayed nothing I could have done".

So sweet victory!

Wait, I was wrong again. They don't translate directly from USD into ASD, they just mark it up. You might be saving $5 on a US $100 purchase, but that same game is selling for $60 over there anyway.

Damn it, whatever. We make do. I'm still going to buy this thing anyway. Hey, can you unlock Fall units in multiplayer? I think that'd be kinda a neat taster.

I think you just have to own the DLC to unlock the units. Ontop of that, you might have to capture certain provinces to get access to specific units, though that might only apply to the more specialist units (Warrior Monks and the like).

That only applies for avatar campaigns. You can play with everything if you want with friends.

I really don't understand why someone would implement a levelling system for players in a RTS game, I always thought people playing RTS games liked winning through strategy, not simply by having superior units because they own the game longer....

This. I rather play normal games with everyone having all units unlocked.

Superior is very relative.

On one hand, you get stupidly powerful troops. That's true. But on the other hand, your army will be so tiny a band of peasants could overwhelm it.

Even your general's unit becomes so bleeding expensive as you level so all higher level players get tinier and tinier armies as time passes. So yes, there's definitely room for strategy since you can work with gigantic numbers early on (a damn huge advantage in my book) or try to find a balance later on.

If you don't believe me, just look at my win ratio. Every 10 games I win 9. I'm literally not scared of anyone in the multiplayer ladder at all, I don't care what level they are or what units they have. I have absolute confidence in my strategy. It's especially easy when you get the players who only have a tiny handful of elite units, since all I have to do is attack move in their general direction, grab a beer from the fridge, then come back and watch them clean up.

So this vs this, then?

(what is your strategy, umiman?)

I'm absolutely dreadful at multiplayer, but Umiman is absolutely right. I steamrolled an army consisting entirely of elite, hero units with an army that was largely ashigaru, because elite, hero units are frigging expensive and I outnumbered him 20 to 1.

Aklyon: Ayup. It gets pretty ridiculous when you look at the units deployed at the end of the battle since the level 0 would have deployed 5000 men or so whereas the level 10 would only have about 200. I don't care how elite they are, outnumbered 25 to 1 is guaranteed loss.

Jackrabbit: Good to hear! There's nothing to fear when you always have some sort of advantage you can field against anyone! :P

-----

As for my strategy well. I don't know how in depth you want me to go but I'll cliff notes it. It's how I play, there's no need to feel obligated to follow it since everyone has their own playstyle.

1. Majority of army is melee. Priority is speed, morale, and killing power. The objective is to reach the enemy and not rout.
2. 1 - 3 units of cavalry. Important for taking points far away and flanking. Flanking is super important since if you can pull it off, you basically win. Yari cavalry are good against enemy flankers too. General rule of thumb is 1 cavalry for every 3 melee I have.
3. A few units of skirmishers. Just a handful. Doesn't even matter how good they are as long as they're cheap. Used to lull the enemy into a sense of superiority (since the skirmishers are just bait) and be an initial target for enemy ranged to focus on. Once the enemy locks into combat with them, I charge the melee.

That's about it. I tend to be super aggressive. Timing is very important. I feel you should never let the enemy have time to think clearly after the initial salvo of rounds is fired, so every attack must come at the best time to confuse the crap out of him.

P.s: Every single one of my losses has been to an enemy with superior mobility. So there ya go.
