OH DEAR GOD KYOTO WAS... Surprisingly easy to take. I was expecting more really. Its the other factions that make it hard.

PICTURES. I think that will work anyway.

my god, i didn't expect kiysho ninja to be so powerful.  It's the grenades that make them really, I mean if you wait for the enemy to pass you can easily take out the general and then escape.  Then run back when the fighting starts and take the bowmen, they really fufil all the roles of calvary, but better really.

I started up a new campaign as Oda, and quickly swept through the coast to my south, stopping once I reached the smithing province of Sagami or so. It's really a surprisingly great strategic position, with the inner provinces only bordering the sea and mountains, and 5 years later I've got a horde of ashigaru with +5 armor from smithy and encampment matching, raising archers from 1 to 6 and yari from 2 to 7. An 8 province Date fortuitously tries to invade my vassalized Hojo, so I march my army over to take some castles. My force of 1200 is attacked by a force of 2400, and I gladly oblige. Surprisingly, my yari spear walls fail to hold the line and I successfully tactical withdraw, with 800 casualties on both sides. Of course, the Date engage my army again and it's a massacre.

That'd be F12. Works for any Steam game (and, in fact, any game running with the Steam overlay!), since it's integrated into Steam itself.  :D

Aha, my address ain't on there buddy :P

Anyway, I took screenshots by putting it in windowed mode and pressing printscrn. It doesn't work if you're not in windowed mode. Press insert, and you'll jump into the eyes of a soldier. Scroll a mouse wheel to change soldiers. You can get some great shots that way.

I'm going to keep updating that album I think

Edit?

Seriously? F12?

FML, i've been doing it the difficult way.

Ok. On hard, I played

Oda                           Versus             Hattori
5 Yumi ashigari                                 4 katana
9 Yari ashigari                                  3 Light cavalry
Nobunaga                                         2 General Units
                                                       Yari ashigari
                                                       10 Yumi ashigari

Results?
Hattori : 1200+
Oda : 20 including 4 friendly fire.

Why? Because the AI let the melee units be bombarded by my archers while the hattori archers were hiding in two different forests and when the melee units were routed I approached one stack(yeah, 5 archer units standing in a stack) to start shooting some they shot a few arrows and then bullrushed a spearwall, broke and got chased down.

tl;dr Is the hattori AI broken or was this an exception?

Archers were hiding because they heard Nobunaga sold his soul to some demons.
It's an exception though, never seen that happen.

When I played the superior-archer-types (Chosomething), I had armies with lots of bow samurai and archer monks. Enemy always rushed me in melee, even when defending, with the only exception of siege defence. So I've definitely never seen AI just sit and be peppered. Now that I'm playing Date, with mainly melee army, AI often tries to skirmish and pepper my forces instead.

That being said, Total Wars have never been known for the quality of battle AI...

So, I'm playing Oda on Legendary. Thats the hardest possible, right? Or does another clan have a worse starting position?

You start in a good defensive position if you manage to beat the clans that declare war on you when you start. But I guess it would be the hardest start.

I thought uesegi was harder myself. Within 3 turns I had everyone around me declare war because I attacked Honma... HONMA.

The Hogo have a hell of a run the first few years, seriously the people on each side of you declare war just a few years in.  I actually had to completely demolish the Kodo just to stop the random massive army attacks.

Is there any word on when multiplayer will be playable? I really want to play some good multiplayer battles, but I've only managed to have 2 that didn't result in a desync near the end, and that would be tolerable if it didn't take 30 minutes to get a match.

Holy cows, I was steamrolling over everyone one by one, then I hit Kyoto and took it in two seasons suffering mediocre losses (2 generals out of 7 and about 20% of my army).

AND THEN THE CHAOS! OH GOD THE CHAOS! Everyone went against me, even my vassals... Which were right where my money making towns were (and almost no defenders). Damn, next time I play it I leave noone alive :P.
