Perhaps the update is hardware / OS specific ? I haven't noticed anything...
All in all, I'm quite enjoying this game, and the AI doesn't seem so brain-dead.

Well, it was ridiculous but I think the 9GB pointless update problem (and indeed it was a problem and probably not intentional) has been fixed.

Thankfully I was playing at the time and had no update pushed my way.

So was I, I guess. There is no 9 gigabyte update, just a 30 something megabyte update that somehow confused steam the first time it was pushed out.

So... Shogun decided to update for 7gb again...

WTF steam...

I changed my download location, I bet US - Miami doesn't have the patch files for Shogun and it's forcing me to download entire gigantic files to update. I had the same problem with Global Agenda before when my download location was US - Chicago, made me download 11gb twice.

WTF creative assembly...
Fixed that for you. Out of all 70 something games I own on Steam, Empire is definitely the most troublesome. Refusing to install from disk and download the full 20gig instead, only to suddenly decide that it DOES have the disk at 95%, trying to install from that, failing a validation then deciding to download it all again, corrupting itself on bootup and requiring a third 20gb download when verifying the game cache, then having an 11gb patch that did absolutely nothing but disable my preorder bonus unit(which couldn't be reactivated anymore because they key had been used), getting it's first real patch, installing that to the wrong directory and then it tries to correct that by downloading the full game AGAIN to the new folder, leaving a 20gb lump in the old one with no uninstall button, then needing the patch again because it got overwritten by the game itself.

So it doesn't surprise me at all that CA is still grossly incompetent at getting their shit to work with a third party program.

Getting my armies to keep/move in formation is proving troublesome. When setting the battle up I place my units how I'd like them and group them all. Using the arrows under generals icon to move them around works at first. Some time into the battle it seems to stop working and they all start moving at different speeds. Does anyone know what I'm going wrong?

Let me put that in a haiku for y'all, since that seems appropriate:

Having no large update
Fun game is fun
Haters gonna hate

So far I am liking this total war game better then any other I have played.  It's really well done.

Glad to hear that. I've been holding off on getting it until I'm not so swamped with games I already have that I haven't beaten yet, but it's good to know that this one can go on my list of ones to get.

Try putting them into a group. Grouped units will hold the same formation, even if you use standard right-click orders. (Without grouping, right-click orders result in everybody spreading out into a single line.  >:( )

As for the update problem... that sounds painful. I think a lot of the counter-whining ("Stop bitching about updates!!1") stems from the apparent inconsistency of the updates - I've yet to notice an update going by, and I'm usually pretty good at noticing when something's been downloaded. If it's happening often, consider disabling updates to Shogun: right-click on game --> Properties --> Updates. Once CA gets their head on straight and they stop pushing random huge updates, you can re-enable it. (This may, of course, make online play problematic... but SP is kinda the focus of most Total War games anyways.  ;) )

Yup, for me it's at par with Rome:TW, except with better AI and awesome online features.

(And steam being a bitch to me and making me download gigantic gigabytes over and over... And of course, the unnecessarily stupid game size)

Strangely it only seems to work part of the time. My mounted general won't stop overtaking the guys there to protect him, I can see the honour in wanting to be at the front but it's messing things up. Am I the only one experiencing this? Thanks for the advice Thexor.

I've noticed this too. Sometimes, they keep formation, other times they don't. Try using the buttons in the bottom left hand corner to maneuver groups, and see if that functions better.

Get your general to walk, that should at least keep him behind or with your foot soldiers.
