Almost certainly a combination of the two, well assuming you mean 'good' in that its better than it was on normal. I've yet to play any game (excluding 'solved' games such as chess :P) where the AI can match a human without cheating though so it's unlikely they didn't include bonuses for harder settings.

Try Starcraft some time. :p
Starcraft does cheat, in a fashion, it can set up buildings and control humans with far more efficiancy than a human ever could, likely ordering multible buildings at the same time.

Well, true, that's what the Overmind more or less exploits with its Mutalisk based strategy- but that's not as much cheating as it's just the human player being incapable of having such fast reflexes.

Which brings to mind another thing mentioned in the preview videos for Shogun II. The developers mentioned that, the AI does not necessarily have complete knowledge of everything on the map, as with previous titles, with the intention of making it limited in the same way a human is limited. I'm sure that when it comes to the strategic map, the AI will cheat, they seem to want to keep the AI from cheating in Tactical battles. By cheating, I only mean doing things that a human is incapable of; commanding multiple fronts at the same time, knowing everything, etc.

Eh, my biggest issue is the unlimited money the AI gets.... The reason for their massive armies against my own much smaller armies.

I'd actually quite like to see how it fairs against some of the top rush players, as I imagine that prior to having mutalisks is where it's biggest weakness it.

Just preordered on Steam, bring on Tuesday :)

FIrst experiment will be to try an all cavalry army.  With the ability to dismount it may well be quite effective.

EDIT: No pre download option makes me sadface...

Yes, but extraordinarily expensive. Calvary armies are usually effective but not sustainable.

They are also small. The cavalry sizes are pretty tiny compared to regular infantry.

Which means they cannot maintain a sustained fight with any of the infantry I've seen so far.

There is a mod that removes scripting from the demo.
I'm downloading this at present so can't say for certain, but they claim to have disabled all scripting in preference of the actual AI.  And it's apparently SMART.

This mod only actually effects the historical battle, changing it so that there is merely one opponent of approximately equal strength to yourself and making it rely solely upon battle AI.  I can't really say anything abouth the campaign.

I've fought the battle three times now (on hard difficulty), using different strategies each time.  I won one by a mile, scraped a win in another, and got absolutely thrashed in the last.

The AI flanks properly, attempts to maintain battle lines/formations, counters aggressive moves pretty well, (meeting attempts to flank it with cavalry by either positioning spear units in the way or a unit or two of it's own cavalry,) covers long distances in a sensible formation, has performed a tactical withdrawal, attacked from multiple angles, hidden units in trees for an ambush, withdrawn archers sensibly when my infantry approaches (and vice versa.)

If the modder is being honest about not messing with the AI, the possibility of actually losing an evenly matched battle has risen a hell of a lot.  It's not perfect, but I'm damn impressed.  Unfortunately, AI generals still seem to get treated as standard cavalry though.

EDIT: I'll post up my impressions on the actual game as soon as I get to play it.  Hopefully this has been representative.

What's the strategy you used to win the historical battle on hard?  As much as I hate to admit this, I keep getting my ass handed to me by it.  Or did the no scripting remove the betrayers too?

Don't know about lordcooper, but the way I did it was take every single unit I had and ran them to my general at the corner of the map. And I kept two units of spearmen behind the traitorous general. Then I dismounted allt he cavalry and waited in the forest.

Archers in front, all others behind them. Wait and kill. When the general turns traitor, kill him with the spearmen.
