It's not Ninja compression. It is just the standard compression that Game companies used to do before when they had to worry about storage capacity of distribution media and hard drives.
Nono, some warez-installers actually compress the audio, video, and textures before decompressing them to what the game understands. Well, not every scene team does that, that was an exaggeration.

Well, yes, that is true. My main point is that the files that are being compressed are files that need not be excessively large in the first place, and that the developers, in previous years wouldn't dream of releasing a game that takes up so much hard drive space.

Apparently the only reason is because it would take longer to load resources if they were compressed, although considering how long it takes to load the game or go from campaign to battle I don't see how it would be noticeably longer.

Actually, your HDD speed is your biggest issue when loading up a game. So a larger file isn't a better file. CPU-wise, a jpeg at 100 takes only very very slightly more cpu to load than a tga or a bmp, which is easily compensated by the fact it's much smaller and the lossyness is minimal.

Take Hitman for example, it's a game that loads extremely fast and it uses .DDS files with compression for textures.

Either way, I'm really bleh about the 20gb thing, specially if it is because of HD cutscenes which I would simply skip anyway.

Jackrabbit: Nah, you're just outnumbered three to one in the historical battle. :P
I'll wait until the actual game to decide if the AI is good then. I do love how the battles look, though. As always, it's super awesome and charges are astonishingly brutal.

Just played the demo, runs fine and looks pretty nice. Though for some odd reason it lacks anti alias.

It did confirm a few of my bad expectations, amongst which is the overblown focus on rock-paper-scissors mechanics. Seems I wont get any useful pike formations again, sigh. The rather limited size of the map is another. The fact that Japan has a rather linear shape realy doesnt help either.

Seems they put some more effort into multiplayer, which never realy seemed an interesting part of TW games to me.

They also havnt fixed that pesky little defect that missle units show when you order them some place with right mouse button drag, and then order them to shoot something they arnt facing. They just keep running foreward untill manualy force the idiots to look the right way. That thing has been there ever since empire.

The AI hasnt realy demonstrated itself much. The campaign AI was completely idle, and for the tutorial battle its to see what is and isnt scripted in. The siege AI at least seems less inane, when defending at least.

I will wait a bit to aquire a more demonstrative demo.

Try playing the historical battle.  Although I think a bit of that is scripted too.

Seems to me there have been -some- improvements to the AI, but it's hard to say.

Let me tell you a sad story.

I was pretty sure I wouldn't buy Shogun 2 due to the stupid HD size requirement... But after I saw it has... an epic crapload of items for TF2 if you preorder... I think my heart skipped a beat... Now I wanna buy it.

Was anyone else impressed by the game's intro cinematic by the way?

I thought it was very, very well done. All the way down to the fact that the other duelist got shot in the back. I thought it was perfect, as nary a second before that I was thinking "if I were on the enemy side, I'd shoot him right now but there's no way they'd dishonor a duel like that."

I also really liked the clan cinematic. The one when you choose your clan and it gives you your purpose and strength. I love that. Doesn't tell me more than I need to know, but it gives me identity and something to rally behind. I thought that was quite lacking in Empire as every single nation was exactly the same. Didn't matter who I was. Medieval and Rome had that great sense of identity for each faction expressed in all the pre-battle speeches ("It is said that the French are better lovers than we are. This is true lads. Ask any goat, sheep, or farm animal in the land.") and the narrator and the loads of historical text all over the place. If Shogun 2 has the same, I would greatly enjoy it I think.

Shogun 2 Definitely has a extreme variety of pre-battle speeches. That's one of the big things they're happy to bring back. Pre-battle speeches and generals with the complex traits seen in Rome and Medieval 2.

So, who's got the full version? Is the battle AI remotely competent?
